I know the humidity level of a humidor should be around 65-70.. My problem is that my hydrogometer says it's at 75? So, I leave it open for a while in it goes back to my desired temp. A few hours later it goes back to 75. How can i get it to stay at 65-70? Any help would be apreciated.
Oh and one more thing. What do beads do? Should i get some? Thanks.

To start off, do a "salt test" on your hygrometer to see what its really reading...just do a search here for how to do it.

Second, get some beads...they absorb or give off moisture depending on the relative humidity and keep it at a consistant level of 65 or 70 percent depending on which ones you get.

I did a "salt test" last night on my crappy hygrometer that came with my humidor and it was waaaay off. I recommend also getting a digital hygrometer and keep it in there to check on regularly.

benjamin319,

use beads to control your humidity.

I was once in your same situation...then I read the Humidor posts and found out about humidity beads...they come in 65% and 70%.

These beads are special that they both absorb and retain water so that it can regulate the humidity in your humidor.

I purchased 1/2 lb. of 65% humidity beads and they work great!

Also, do a search in the Humidor Forum...you'll learn a lot about what people are getting and how they are dealing with humidity issues.

I use the el cheapo hygrometers because I use beads in all my coolerdors. The beads are virtually fool proof and will keep the humidity EXACTLY where they're designed to. With a cheap hygro, it will fall off when the beads need water. I don't care exactly what the RH is, all I know is that when I see the hygro drop, I have to add some water to the beads.

Yeah get some beads. They're idiot proof. Steal a pair of nylons (new preferably) from the wife and twist up a sack of them (a little bigger then a golf ball) for the humi. Im partial to black because its easier to see the beads. Go to Target and go to the section where they sell travel toiletries and buy one of those small spray bottles the women folk buy for their hair products. Pick up some distilled water and give it a squirt as needed. Keep em about half clear (hydrated) and have milky (dehydrated) and worry no more.
