I'll start out with a couple of things. First off, I live in Denver (where humidity is very low). Second, I purchased a three tier humidor at a garage sale for a good price, not ideal, but it was difficult to pass on the opportunity. I seasoned it for a week with a glass of water, and a sponge wet with distilled water. There are roughly 60 cigars in it as of now.
I have accepted that the seal on the humidor is not the greatest. I have tried to improve it the best I can by using electrical tape and building up the seal where it seems to be lacking, and as far as using a dollar to check the seal, it seems to be pretty tight in most places where the door it. In our place, we generally open the windows at night to cool the place down and close them during the day to keep the heat out, and it is comfortable for the most part. I have recently salt tested my hygrometer, and it is right on. Because the cabinet is fairly large, I have 2 humi-care jars filled with distilled water in the humidor.
The problem I am having is the humidity drops significantly over night, down to about 58 on occasion. The temperature remains in the 68-72 range during the day and overnight, but I cannot seem to stabilize the humidity level. During the day it is right around 68, but the problem is at night. Is this simply a problem with the seal or something that can be remedied some other way.
Any help would be appreciated.
