Humidity causing problems?

I apologize in advance if this topic has already been covered, but I'm curious.

A few of my cigars seem to flare (and partly chip) at the foot. The RH of my humidor is stable at 68%. So I'm wondering if this is a problem that is specific to certain vitolae (my petit pyramide is affected the most) or if it's a function of certain cigars just being perhaps too close to the humidifier inside the humidor? (I should also mention that I have a 'Treasure Dome' 250-count humidor with the two basic large humidifier units that come with it). And if it is the cigars being too close to the humidifier what are some tricks to help?

Thanks for the help!

Have you calibrated your hygrometer? If not the 69% is meaningless and we can't help you untill you do. Let us know.

I am using two Western Caliber III digital hygrometers. One I have placed in the upper tray of the humidor and the other is in the bottom underneath.

thanks!

You still need to verify these are accurate.

A swollen foot is usually a sign of too high an RH. Are you using Viper's beads. If not, get the 65% variety. They will solve all your problems. You do need to salt test your hygro's or you will never know for certain if their telling the truth. Are they both reading the same RH? Is this the brand of hygro that tells you not to salt test?

I have read (here on CP) about the Viper beads. I'll look into those for sure. The info with the hygrometers did say that a test was not necessary because of these were 'pre-calibrated.' I guess I just shouldn't believe everything I read :( .

Thanks for your help... I really appreciate it. I'll search on here for the info about the hygro test.

SUre, they were pre-calibrated at the factory. But as an Electronics Technician, I am required to verify that "pre-calibrated" ELectronics are still within spec. Just do the test and note the difference. Then put the meters back in the humi, wait till they stabilize, then apply the difference.

Salt test has been completed. The hygros have been in the ziplock for 24 hours and are dying to get out. Both hygros are reading 69% and temperature is within 3 tenths of a degree.

So I understand that the Salt test should produce a 75% reading. That being said my guys are off by 6 so when I was keeping my humidor at 68% it was really 74%!!!

This totally explains some of the burn issues I've had with a couple cigars as well as the flaring of the feet of a few of my smokes. On the other hand... those super oily wrappers really do look nice :D

I also spoke with Viper and 65% beads are on the way!

Thanks for the help with this one! Now I wonder what smoke to have for breakfast? ;)

I love it when a plan comes together!

ah, thanks Emo. I really do try to do my best :D

:( but... now the problem is reducing the humidity inside the humidor... uh oh! is there a devil doc in the house with a suggestion? ;)

I'm all ears! thanks....

If you have any extra boxes or cedar blocks, put them in your humidor. Once it stabilizes to the % you want, take the extras out.

Got your beads yet? Relax untill they arrive. They will solve all your problems.

Open lid. Wait a few minutes. CLose lid. Repeat.
Remove whatever hydro unit you have been using.
Use beads. Repeat until you die every time a new guy asks about such topics..."Hey, you should really try VIper's beads...they worked for me!"

Thanks law (and doc & emo)... The mantra is in my head and it won't leave,

"use Viper's beads, use Viper's beads..."

I'm starting to get really sleepy or something :whistling: think it's time for my breakfast smoke...
