So heres some background: I got my big humidor a few weeks ago, and pulled out all of the wet foam from the two lid "bricks" and replaced it with Viper's Heartfelt Industries 70% humidity beads. I also placed two 4 oz. tubes of beads and a small dish of beads in my 250 ct. humidor.

Fast forward to Thursday, I looked and saw that my humidifiers needed some recharging. I wet the tubes as well as the two bricks and dish, shook out any excess, and replaced them in my humidor. I then closed my humidor for good until today, Saturday.

Today, when I left to work this morning, I popped open my humidor to grab a Java and a RP OWR to give to a friend who doesn't have any cigars right now. I checked the hygrometer and it said 67 degress and 71% humidification. So far, so good right? More or less I suppose for those of you in the camp of 70/70.

I came home from work early today because of some family issues, and sorted some of that out. I popped open my humidor, reminding you that it's only been 10 hours later than my initial check at 4 am when I left to work. My hygrometer said 68 degress and 82% humidification!!!! Holy sh*t!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the hell happened?!??!?! :(

In my stubbornness, I grabbed a Tatuaje Cabaiugan (sp?) and went outside to smoke it, feeling I would deal with my humidor problem afterwards. What a TERRIBLE SMOKE. The wrapper split in at least three different places, and the wrapper was coming off near the top. It really sucked that a wonderful cigar was ruined. I could only get to 2/3 of the cigar before I just let it die out. I couldn't handle it anymores...

So, at this point, I'm letting my humidor sit with the lid open for a few hours until it calms down. I took some things out and am hoping it doesn't turn into a soggy mess. I am thinking I won't be able to light up anything from there for at least a week until it normalizes.

Any advice, similar experience???

Clarify this: when you "wet" the beads, and then had to shake the excess out, is that because you submerged them, or dumped water on them, or something else like that? If so, that's your problem. Beads should just be misted with distilled water from a spray bottle for recharging. If all the beads are saturated (translucent), then they can't absorb excess humidity from the humidor. They should be about 70% clear and 30% white, so they can both give off and absorb humidity as needed.

And if the cigars were in that environment for only about 10 hours, it shouldn't take too long to get them back to a normal humidity. Just dry box them for a couple of days, then put them in a stable humidor and they should be fine.

Yep. What he said. Sounds like you over saturated them. Leave a lid open or dry the beads with a hair dryer.

Yeah, I have since taken out half of the wet beads, replaced them with dry beads, mixed em up, and now my hygrometeres reading at 72% on the down slope ::crosses fingers:: HOPEFULLY!!!!

It appears that you are doing too much, too fast, and overshooting on both ends.

Yeah, it was all going good for a consistent time, then I screwed it all up!! Oh well, like you said, in the end its just cigar smoking, and not to win some cold war....

Problem solved?

YES! FINALLY too, problem was solved. I couldn't smoke anything from my humi for approximately 4-5 days because:

a.) It was soggy and burned EXTREMELY HOT

b.) It would not burn correctly, or burn at all.

I open-lidded it for about a day, went through and swapped out half of my beads that were wet with dry ones, and then added a full dish of dry beads to absorb the extra humidity.

I let that sit for a few days, and checking it the other day it read at 72. Success, but the stick were still soggy. I then let it sit some more, and it read 69 the other day, and I pulled out a La Gloria Cubana and an AVO 787 and smoked it to the nubs!

I had a problem with my AVO, the wrapper split halfway, but I'll take that over moldy cigars anyday!

Edited for st00p1d1tee...

Thats good news souldog

Your misfotune is helping me figure out what not to do once I get my humi :p

Ashton 787? You mean AVO 787?

You guys need to read the threads in the humidor section. You'll find a wealth of information on setting up a humidor, charging your beads, ranges for humidity levels and salt testing your hydrometer.

You can learn a lot from other people's mistakes :whistling:
