Humi Too Humid

I recently got some beads from an ok B&M shop. I think I put in too much distilled water as my digital hygrometer is reading about 78. I tried to calibrate the hygrometer with the salt test. I left it in for about 6 hrs and it read 72. I turned the dial without opening the bag and reset so it read 75. Came back 8 hrs later and it said 78 (still in the sealed bag). So, again without opening the bag, I dialed it down to 75 and left it in the bag. About 10 hours later it said 72. The temp in the bag/room consistently reads 70-71 so temp changes shouldn't be an issue. The bag is airtight. So, either the salt releases varying levels of water or I have a less than perfect hygrometer. Is this reasonable variation? Going back to the Humi reading 78, I've read putting the beads in the fridge dessicates the beads... if I want to decrease humidity by 8, how long should the beads go in the fridge? Thanks for in advance for lending help to a willing newb!

Myself, get a digital meter, get a heartfelt calibration pack and you might be surprised at what you find.

Done! Sorry about breaking the rules. Too concerned about high humidity. The Heartfelt beads sure have a good reputation. Debating between 65% and 70%. Are you suggesting I return my digital hygrometer or is the meter you referred to something else? Thanks!

Droid, welcome to CP! (laughs at Pugman)

Any digital hygrometer will do. Just make sure to let it sit for 24hrs when calibrating it. **Double bag it!!

Your local shop will have Boveda Calibration kits (idiot proof salt-testing if you're still having troubles).

Until that's done, it's hard to say if your beads are oversaturated.

To dry them out, I use a hairdryer. Some guys use the oven.

**search may be of some help

I personally go with the 65%, but everybody seems to have their own preference. If you are worried about the salt test, get a calibration kit before you return the hygrometer.

What jnknzz said above in red.
I think that you are not letting the test bag stabilize to get an accurate reading. The hygrometer needs to sit in there 24-36 hours while the humidity stabilizes inside of the bag. Your are chasing the varying humidity by adjusting the calibration of the hygrometer too soon.

If your ambient RH is lower than the humidor, it's really just as simple as leaving the lid open for a few hours. It ain't rocket science......

I've found that 65% works the best in dealing with humidity swings. It keeps things right in the sweet spot when the ambient humidity in my house gets a little high. And in the winter when things dry out big time it never lets the humi drop below 63%.

Welcome to CP and enjoy your stay!

Thank you all. That makes sense to let it simmer for at least a day. I think I'm just too impatient. I appreciate the advice. It seems that 65% is better to smoke but 70% might be better for long term storage.
