OK, so during Cory's (Blue Dragon) visit to me here in Alaska, I was 'showing off' my humidor to him. I was picking sticks to take with us fishing, and also showing him some of my goodies gifted to me. One of the ones I was proud of, and waiting to smoke for the right reason, was a Hoyo de Monterrey Particulares Edicion Limiatda 2000. In the coffin and everything! So when I opened the coffin to show him, I was confronted with a horrible sight... whispy mold starting to grow!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! no no no no no no no no no!!!! So it was immediately separated from the humi, and I took it with us in a separate baggie. Dammit! It's a big bastard (9 1/4" x 47) and I never got the chance to smoke it due to Cory's constant desire to fish fish fish. Which meant CLEANING fish fish fish  (Just kidding bro...)

ANYWAYS... it's been in the baggie and I didn't want to lose it to the mold. It was very slight, and wiped completely off, and had not taken hold on the foot yet (Thank God). So... it was a nice day, the wife was at work, and I was done with the 'honey do' list. Sooooo... me and the doggies decided to fire this bad boy up and see what the damages were. I had an Anejo Shark in reserve in case the HdM had to be tossed for any reason (GASP!)

Here's the bad boy

And by the time clock on the camera, I took that pic at 7:12pm. I clipped the cap, took a tentative test draw (hoping I didn't get a blast of mold taste!) and put fire to the foot. So far so good... it actually tasted good - no mold that I could tell. And, as usual... no definitive taste can be described by me. But it was nice... seemed to be very smooth (almost buttery! ) and fairly mild. But there was a long ways to go on this sucker.

As I smoked it down, the flavors got more pronounced, and more defined. I still cannot say what they are as I can never tell one from the next. but they were there, and pretty damn good. And still no evidence of mold! I might have dodged a bullet on this one... thank God. I would have cried to throw this cigar away.

I was even in the chat room for awhile on this... and the cigar outlasted my laptop battery! 17" laptop with wifi enabled means short battery life! Plus it outlasted the sun for the evening, and all I could do was sit there and enjoy the sunset. Damn... sucks to be me! With my foo-fooey drink needing refreshing twice, I puffed and puffed away. And the closer to the end it got, the better it got. The flavors got more and more pronounced as the end neared, and it was just so damn smooth. No harshness, no bitterness, no nothing but solid flavor and enjoyment.

So here's almost the end...

this was taken at 9:53pm, about 10 minutes from ditching it. I nubbed this bad boy right down to my fingertips. Damn near 3 hours of enjoyment!

I wasn't looking to smoke this right now... I was hoping to smoke it someday with the BOTL who gifted it to me. But... that was not to be. I'm just glad I was able to see the mold early and save it. And what a save... man o' man what a nice cigar. If this was in any way changed due to the mold, I sure as hell would like to find another to smoke because that would be an awesome, awesome smoke. This was simply amazing... not a strong cigar, and not the most flavorful. But a nice, even cigar with age and smoothness to enjoy for hours. Someday I'll have to take a class on discerning flavors in food, wine and cigars so I can write better reviews. But for now I'll just smoke 'em and enjoy 'em...

Thanks for the awesome review Jim! I also was gifted one of these, and I am waiting to fire it up! (no mold on mine yet) Also, I think the Particulares is the EL from 2001. Thanks for sharing brother! Take care

Brandon

p.s. I didn't know they had grass that far north!
