I spent to day Saturday designing and building some benches on our front porch. After I was done, my mate and I settled in with a nice glass of bourbon and I lit up this mammoth cigar. I paired this with a glass of Van Winkle 12 Year Old in case anyone is interested.
Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona (00)
I think this large cigar is absolutely beautiful. It had a light chocolate colored wrapper with just hints of bloom (plume) from aging. There was only one appreciable vein, but it did nothing but add to the appearance of the cigar. The seams were all tight, which, in my experience, is not always the case with this stick. The pre-light nose was of sweet earth, wood, and coffe. The pre-light draw was firm, but very promising.
This cigar lit up easily and instantly the draw opened up to a place just south of perfect. Each easy puff producted mouthfuls of thick, rich smoke that just hung in the still evening air. The burn was, for the most part, even, with only one slight correction required. The cigar stayed cool down to a nub, never heating up or becoming harsh. The ash was firm and light gray, staying on about an inch at a time. 2000 seems like the time when the quality of Cuban cigars were on the up-swing. They weren't always there yet (as told by inconsistencies), but they could make some great cigars. This was one of them.
The taste of this cigar was, in a word, complex. I've smoked most of a box of these, but have not had one in probably 18 months. Wow, what a difference that time made. It started out with subtle earth tastes and big, powerful woodiness. The woodiness quickly subsided and it picked up a creamy coffee component. The subtle earth stayed there, always teasing the palate. As it smoked, it picked up a sweet spice undertone, almost a raw vanilla and nutmeg concoction. It was outstanding. One of the best underlying flavors I've ever tasted on a cigar. As the cigar neared the end, the creaminess increased as did the overall power of the stick. It finally picked up some great cedar notes, replacing the coffee and sweet earth, but mixing well with the creaminess. Truly one of the best cigars that I have ever smoked.
I have always really liked this cigar and at one time in my life, I could probably call it my favorite. After Saturday, I am reminded why. I have to place this cigar on the same level as the Forbidden X and the Cohiba Piramedes EL. I can only hope that the next one I smoke is as good. I give this cigar an A++ .
