Cigar: Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra
Size: Ebano, 6x45 (Lonsdale)

First things first, Happy Canada Day to all CP-ers!

Executive Summary: Excellently constructed full-flavored cigar, with complex aromas and rich flavor. Recommended. 8.5/10

Background: Dark Sumatra is a full-bodied line extension to the Villazon Hoyo de Monterrey line. It features a dark sumatra leaf wrapper, reportedly aged in palm leaves, and a new filler blend. I received this cigar in my first CP trade (thank you so much - and you know who you are), but a box of 25 goes for $69 at JR.

First impression: The cigar's cedar-wrapped and well-dressed - slightly revised classic Hoyo de Monterrey band, then secondary black-and-gold bands at top and bottom of the cedar wrapper. Wrapper leaf is a dark, dark brown, and very smooth, with few, very small veins. Texture is slightly toothy, slightly oily. Cigar is dead straight and well constructed, slighly soft when pressed. No lumps.

Prelight: Cuts easily with double-bladed cutter. Smells of dark chocolate. Draw is slightly tight. Filler is quite dark brown as well.

Construction/burn: Burn is straight across and razor sharp. Ash is light grey, both outside and in. First ash was after 1-1/4 inch and was quite solid. Draw has a perfect amount of resistance and very smooth.

Flavor/Aroma: Prevailing odors are coffee and dark chocolate, rich and dense in intensity. Some peppery spice, but no bitterness whatsoever. A little coffee acidity on the tongue. After about an inch and a half, a little sweetness comes in, briefly, and the spice changes character, pepper to cinnamon. Going into the last third, a burnt-marshmallow taste comes in and the spice becomes more peppery.

Good balance between flavors is maintained throughout. It starts out medium in intensity, then proceeds to full power by the start of the 2nd third. The last third is very full.

Interestingly enough, it doesn't appear to share many of the earthy aromas of a "standard" Hoyo. Not that this is a bad thing; this is a very good full-flavored cigar.

Time elapsed: 1 hr 20 mins

Nice review, thanks! I've got a box of three different sizes received in my Secret Santa that's several years old if I'm not mistaken. I've yet to smoke one, however I do need to test one out.

Thanks for the review! I am always looking for a good stick at a great price, I think I may need to try to hunt some of these down. I'm enjoying your inexpensive cigar reviews! Thanks for taking the time...

Being relatively new to premium cigar smoking, there are not many cigars I have liked enough that I would buy them again or in any quantity. In my search for what I like, I have smoked a fair number of different cigars and found many of them enjoyable. The HdM Dark Sumatra Ebano is one of the few I find very enjoyable. So much so that I just bought more of them.

Nice review. Keep them coming.

Great review! It's been a while since I've had any of the HDM Dark Sumatra as my local doesn't carry them anymore. Damn shame because this is imo, one of the best cigars I've smoked for the price. I think it's time to revisit this one.

Nice review. I gotta agree that teh HdM DS is one tasty cigar.

Gota agree for the most part on this one! Because of this revue, I took one out for my first time trying this. It is a very tasty cigar. The only issue I had was a slight burn problem which I corrected a couple of times. The only other thing and again both of the issues could have been user error is that it burned real real hot to me. I don't think I was smoking it real fast, but maybe I was! Overall, a very good cigar for the money!

Fine review!

I think these are very decent, fairly priced smokes. When I need to make a purchase at one of the local B&M's we hang out in, these HdM's are on my rotation.

I've been through a couple of boxes of the smaller size (can't remember the name) and I have to say that I do enjoy these. I've lately found a lot of Hondurans no longer appeal to my tastes, but these have continued to b good cigars to me.

Very good review!

Well done review. I hope to see another one real soon.

Nice review. These are solid smokes with a cocoa-ey, coffee flavor that's delicious. One of my favorite inexpensive cigars.

Nice review! I've been eyeing these lately. I guess I've avoided them due to the fact that I've never really cared for the HdM's I've tried. Smoked a truckload of Punch and El Rey del Mundo though.
I guess you've convinced me to try these. I was planning on a JR order, so I'll see if they have this vitola in a fiver.

Nice review! This is an excellent cigar to smoke while drinking the morning coffee.
