How long do beads take to work?

Hi everyone! I recently just purchased my first humidor. Its a 75-100 count desktop that came with those sponge-like humidifiers. I seasoned it for about a week until i received my 65% beads from viper. According to my Caliber III, my humi won't go down below 75-76% with a good handful of beads (about 2oz). Just as a test, I've tried dumping my entire 1lb bag of beads into a bowl without wetting them. I thought that this might suck the extra RH down but it only brought it down to about 71-72% overnight. I'd say about 75-85 percent of the beads are solid white. I've never salt tested the digital hygrometer since the instructions said it would void the warranty so I'm going to assume that its fairly accurate. +/- 1 degree. I did salt test a cheesy analog hygrometer and its giving a reading close to what my caliber says so I'm fairly confident that my readings are correct. Any ideas? Does it take a long time for the beads to fully stabilize? ???

I have had poor luck with analog hydrometers, I would suggest gettin a boveda pack to test your digital with, that will not void the warranty (cigarmoney carries them). Once you have established how far off the hydrometer is, then work on the stability of the humidor.

Is this humidor empty or full? A empty humidors' humidity will fluctuate more than a full one. Check for leaks, leave the dry beads in the humidor for a few days to bring the humidity down.

If I had to guess from your post, it sounds like your hydrometer is off AND the humi needs to stablize. Put the 65% beads in. relax, and have a cigar.

1.) Get a digital hygrometer & calibrate it
2.) Make sure that only 50-60% of the RH Beads are hydrated (ie clear).

Hope this helps!

3.) Put some cigars inside, because its not easy to keep stabile Rh in empty humi :)

Thanks for all the advice guys.

1- I will try to test my hygrometer again.

2- I will let the beads sit in there for a while longer to see if it helps. It's currently only 10% hydrated.

3- I will put my cigars (about 6) to see if it'll stabilize easier.

I'll let you guys know what happens.

Forgot to ask if you properly 'seasoned' your humidor first as well.
(ie place a bowl of distilled water in it and keep it closed for at least a week).

DO THIS:

1.) Take the RH Beads out and spread them on a cookie sheet. Dry them with a hair dryer set on LOW until the RH Beads become milky white and place them back into your humidor.

2.) Repeat until the RH Beads have absorbed all the excess moisture.

Chances are that the RH Beads are saturated and can't absorb any more moisture to bring down your RH.

Once you reach your target RH, then hydrate the RH Beads so 50-60% of them are hydrated.

I seasoned the humi for about a week. I didnt have beads yet, so I just lightly wiped the walls with distilled water and dried it. And then I left a moist sponge on a plastic bag in the box for about week. Ever since then, my RH% has been between 75-80% . Now that I have the beads, its gone down to about 72%. I will dry out the beads some more ans see it that helps. :)

Hey listen to Mark he took care of mine!

Mark the 500 ct and the beads are working awesome! :D

Oh yeh I am home still getting use to every thing! Thanks again! :D

I would also recommend that you test your hygrometer with a Boveda Calibration test kit. The peace of mind is worth the low cost.

It sounds to me as if you do not have good Feng Shui.

Try moving the humi to different places in the room until you achieve the correct harmony.

 Of course!!!

Seriously, you have to be sure of your hygrometer before you can do anything else. ;)

Hahahahha. Funny because I actually did that! First I tried my shelves, then my desk, and now it's on my bookcase. Its still staying at 70% which I guess is fine.
