How full is too full for a humidor

Hiya all!

Thank you for al the great advice so far!

I did a few forum searches but couldn't track down an answer, and I'm positive I'm not the first to ask this, so could anyone point me to a thread where the following question is answered? (No use repeating if it's already been discussed!)

How full should your humidor be ideally? Is there a too full?

I apologize if I missed an obvious thread! But I did find lots of other good info in my search!

I think the answer is; 'it depends'.  My cabinet is wall to wall full, but has active humidification and small circulation fans.  I place things carefully so that air can still flow vertically in the cabinet.  When I ran coolers, I piled them full, never had a problem.

Honestly, and this is a guess, you need to pay attention to air flow in cabinets with active humidification and fans, so the system can do it's job.  In a cooler or a desktop, probably not so much.  Never had any problems with my coolers.

I need this problem, how, full is too full. What I need is to hit the lottery and test the solution.

For some reason I thought there was some rule. Like keep your humidifier 50% full but not more or don't fill it all the way or something. My humi is a 150 count box right now with no cooling or active airflow. Cooling isn't usually a problem here in MN. My basement is stuck at 65* in the summer with the thermostat at 70 and in the winter when I crank it up to 150 to offset the -20 outside... Damn basement still stays at a cool 65... I'm pretty convinced you could put the sun in my living room and the basement would still be 65...

Not great for watching tv, but great for my cigar humi which sits maybe 2-3 degrees above room temp.

...well, this is what my Staebell cabinet looks like.  Keep in mind those boxes are two deep, it's literally wall to wall full.  My guess is that it's quite a bit more than 50% full....maybe something like 95% full.  What I've been careful to do is leave a gap right in the middle of each shelf, so that air can indeed circulate up the back and down through the shelves (like Bob designed the cabinet to do).  I have a little hygro I move around the cabinet and it never varies more than a point or so from top to bottom.  Active humidification takes care of so many problems.....

Very impressive box. It's never big enough is it?

My coolidor is jam packed. I should get a fan system. Some of my smokes seem to burn lopsided. I blame the no circulation. Now I dry box the smokes I think will need it before I smoke em and I haven't had a problem since.

....sure looked big when I bought it.... :p

Don't know, when I ran coolers I had them filled wall to wall with a sack of beads.  Not only did the humidity hang in there perfectly, but the sticks burned and tasted perfectly.  I think uneven burns are unfortunately part of the game. I get them, now and then.  Sometimes a stick or two in a box will burn crappy, the rest burn perfectly.  Hard to imagine a humidity variance in the same box.

Guys, that's 10+ years of collecting, right there.  Not like I ran out and bought it yesterday.....

Love it... and I'm not sure whether I hope to go that deep into it or not...

Probably will though

Too full is when stock restricts air flow. If you've got air flow and the appropriate humidity source/amount, you're good.

Great advice!

And that cabinet is now my goal in life... Maybe I should just remodel my closet or build a walk-in humidor...

Gotta act while the wife still has some patience.

Ok. So how many people started to play the "identify the box" game when they see a photo like that. I spy a box of My Father Bijiou 1922...I spy some Padron...I spy a boat load of Cubans....

Bolivars, H Upmann and, at the very bottom, that black box, those expensive Gurkha's everyone is talking about.

BBS Has it all. How is his pink Ferrari?

What the hell do you do for a living?   And how much do you pay your ex-wife?

My cigar journey is kind of firing up. I'm smoking all sorts but not really collecting/ storing...I think I'm afraid to buy my first box because I don't want any to go bad...any recommendations for my first humidor/system? I plan on getting Joyas

Thanks guys
