How big of a mess did Roger Goodell inherit?

Nobody talks about it but it seems Paul Tagliabue left Goodell a complete mess. Goodell has spent a great deal of his time trying to control the NFL's thugs and NFL's deteriorating image, which begs the question "what was Paul Tagliabue doing when he held the position?"

Paul was out getting as much as the 18-35 year old demographics as he could.
From the commercials to the half-time show, you can see moral values getting tossed out the window.
Since the NFL had no clear definition of what was right and what was wrong, thugs could thrive.

I'm not sure he inherited a mess, it's just gotten worst over the last 2-3 years....plus , a lot of these issues were handled behind the scenes before, not in public. I think the game's personalities have changed just like our society. In NCAA Football, these kids are getting arrested weekly, the thug infested NBA is hard to follow anymore, steroid MLB, etc. The influx of money has forced colleges to push guys along with no regard to there social weaknesses, more so now than in the past!...$$$...and pro teams will almost put anyone on the field without a murder conviction. The Pacman thing came back to bite Jerry Jones in the ass....and that move will rumble throughout all sports for now....but only temporarily!

I think Roger Goodell has done a good job with what he has to work with...he's a class act as a leader.

And by the way...the NFL will gross over 7 Billion this year.

Interesting point! Has it gotten worse or has it just gotten exposure because Godell is doing something about it. I'm not sure the Vick and Pacman issues would even have been publicized under Tagliabue. I think they would have been swept under the carpet just like the Ray Lewis thing and all the others that occurred during his tenure.

I think the NFL has been lucky so far in that all of it's issues haven't dealt with the integrity of the game. As far as I can recall, all of it's issues have dealt with the integrity, or lack thereof, of it's individuals. Unlike the ref scandal in the NBA and Pete Rose and steroids in baseball that have torn at the very fabric of the game that is played. While I think a tighter leash should be placed on some of the thugs in the NFL, they are fortunate to have these issues only relate to off-field issues. Granted there have been several instances of people in the NFL getting suspended for steroid usage over the years but I don't think it has been as wide spread as what was/is going on in MLB. And for the life of me I can't figure out why. The prevelance of 6'5" 280 guys running 4.7 40s is alarming and I don't view this as natural so maybe they just have better and harder to detect steroids.

Good points Clint

The only place I will challenge you is this.......Every year guys are getting injured because of the ever growing brutality of 6'5" 280 guys running 4.7 40s. These collisions are becoming inhumanly violent and the human body is simply not capable of tolerating it. This is "on the field" and so are the ever changing rules to accommodate the super human abilities and the thug mentality that goes with them.

But then I am a purist and I want to see the NFL as it was in the 70's before they put skirts on QB's, stopped defensive backs from touching receivers, ruling that the ground can't cause a fumble, etc. etc..

I agree with you Jeff. Jack Lambert, one of the toughest SOBs ever, played at something like 6'2" 220 at middle linebacker!!! He would be a safety or even a corner today except he doesn't possess the necessary speed. Remember how much play The Fridge got when he played? He was 305lbs. There are defensive ends now with speed who play at that weight. Ligaments, tendons and muscle simply aren't made to withstand the torque and punishment these huge people moving at high speeds put on them, not to mention the violence of getting hit by these guys. I would love to see a return to those days. If nothing more, it would return to a time where a player didn't feel the need to celebrate after every pedestrian play and simply tossed the ball to the ref after scoring, ala Walter Payton. Although there was a certain joy I got after seeing Billy White Shoes Johnson score, but that was about the limit I could stomach.
