How big is your ash?

Ok... I keep reading about people talking about the size of the ash on a cigar. Am I doing something wrong? I usually flick the ash off pretty regularly, and don't let it get very big, why? because I dont want it to fall on my clothes.

How often do you flick the ash from your cigars? on a regular basis that is.

You talk to 10 cigar smokers, and they'll give you 13 ways to deal with ash. I have yet to read anything regarding the benefits or hindrances of ashing or even not ashing. Someone care to enlighten me (us?).

As often as it needs it. Which may be after every other puff to as long as the cigar is itslf.

The ash helps keep the smoke cool, so that it doesn't get too hot.

I agree with Sam on how the ash helps cool the smoke. Thus making it smoother and not harsh. Outdoors I will let it go till it falls off by itself. In the car or inside I will ash more often but try to leave half an inch for cooling purposes. Those ashes are hot and you don't want them falling on you.

I just ash it whenever it is getting a bit long in the tooth. It may look cool when it's nice and long, but it also sucks when it falls on your clothing. :)

I knock it off as often as possible. I've ruined too many car seats and shirts keeping an ash on a cigar for "cooling purposes" and I personally have never noticed a difference where a long ash results in cooler smoke.

I like to keep my ash as long as possible. I usually wear a parka-style coat when I am smoking/or if I smoke inside it is usually at my buddy's house and if we ash on the floor it's no big deal, we just gotta sweep it up.

I feel that a long ash helps the smoke work into a better/bolder flavor. Maybe that is just because I know the ash helps keep air away from the cherry of the cigar and keeps the smoke cool. or maybe it's something else. but regardless, I try and keep long, tight ashes while I smoke.

I dock points in a review on a cigar which can't hold ash. Very impotant to me

I too like to let the ash drop on it's own. Especially the first one. I guess I'm just fascinated with fine ashes :D Also a cigar will burn better if it's not ashed too often.

I usually leave it on to test the cigars construction. I only ash if I don't want to make a mess!

I've heard that a cigar just isn't the same after your first ash. Don't know if that is true or not, but just something I've heard. Try and have a contest to see who has the longest ash.

I wouldn't worry about getting the stuff on the carpet or clothes, that's what vaccuums are for! :D :p :p

Try this next time you want to draw stares at the cigar bar. Clip a straight piece of clothes hangar (or use any straight stiff wire) slide it right down the center of your cigar (don’t do it to a good one, this is just for laughs). Then light-up and watch the crowd gather to marvel at your 6 inches of ash.

It would also make for the perfect distraction at your next poker game. Instead of concentrating on their hands, everyone is focused on when that ash will fall. :0 :)

I also read from afew sources that you should leave the ash on the cigar up to a certain point to allow the smoke to cool.
