Hello, :)

I'm new, I did do a search for this with nothing coming up, and I'm curious.

Has anyone in here made their own humidifier? My mom is a florist and I got a few blocks of Oasis foam. I know that's what they use in most of the humidifiers on the market (I'm pretty sure, any way). What is the best way to make something that will work? Is there anything that I need to do specific regarding the holes to cut or amount of surface space exposed? Any hints would be good.

I'm using an Opus X Perfection X "A" box as a humidor (thats works pretty well!) But I know my humudifier is too small. How big should it be and what should I use?

Thanks for the info. :D

Well you have to find some Propylene glycol if you're going to make your own humidifier. It has chemican and/or physical properties that ensure a 70% relative humidity in a closed contained when mixed with water.

Another, better alternative is to buy some Climmax beads and dampen them and put them in a panty hose bag.

I use Oasis from the florist. Make sure it's clean, new, and the absorbant variety. Find a container that you can place in your humidor. Cut the Oasis to fit, but not stick out. Soak it with 50% propylene glycol/ distilled water solution (pharmacist has it if you ask them as 100%). It will work. I custom made several, using a 50 mL beaker, tiny jam jar, as well as a plastic container (travel pill box, drilled holes in top). They work fine, improvise...so you can find the room for them to sit in your humidor. Just try and make sure the foam is saturated (moist) and is not dripping onto your cigars.

Hope this helps, Happy smoking!

What ever you use for a container, fill it full of water then freeze it. When you drill your holes, the block of ic will keep the plastic from cracking or collapsing.

Thanks for the quick advice. Sunward...yes, it's brand new out of box. I can get so much of it it's unbelievable...should go into business for myself selling the stuff. I do have PG solution...and the advice about freezing water before drilling is brilliant, thanks EMODX. This is my little project for the next couple of days.
Now, does anyone know how much better the Diamond Crown Humi's are (and equivilant) and if they are worth the price, or am I going the right route, because I'd much rather spend $ on cigars than plastic toys!

My thoughts would be to get some beads (less hassle and worry) and spend my time & money on cigars. To each their own. :)

Oh, I definetly agree. What are beads though. I've heard of them on this site, but what is the brand name or certain type that is recommended.

Thanks,

I've got a 50 count if you wanna work something out.

WOW :0

I go from asking about humidifiers to lookign at Opus Sharks! I have a couple of Anejo Sharks in my humi but I've never seen those. Where did you dig those up, KayakinBoy? Very nice. What'er the cost of those?

ha ha, it's my prize right now. They came in the opus x humidor from 2002 and if you can find them they are around maybe 70, 75? The fuente store in Vegas will have them soon right? ???

Have you ever bought anything in Vegas? Can you say GOUGE!!. But thanks for the tease...it really sucked!! :sign: But those would be great to get my hands on. I will be in Vegas at the end of the month...so you never know what my credit card statement will look like.

I use beads in my fridge-dor and beads/foam in my humi. Since the fridge-dor seals tightly, I dont have to worry. Now the humi travels with me on the ship, and doesn't seal as well. So I keep 1 puck of beads and 1 puck of foam. I just squirt a tiny amount of water on the foam when the RH dips, and the beads regulate the RH like a charm.

Oh yeah, there are deals to be had on humidors. If you have the money to spend on a nice humidor, go for it. Myself, I spend my money on cigars.

I agree...it's funny because the guys I buy cigars from always laugh at the fact that I use a cigar box for a humi. But it works pretty damn well...but that's why I started this about the homemade humidifier. Because I figured that I needed a bigger one, I knew I could make one. But if I find the beads...I won't have to. (Although I probably will just to find out if I can! )

PS. My wish list includes every Opus X from the 2002 Limited Humi!!! Got that KayakinBoy? :whistling:

Do a search for Climaxx and there's your answer on the beads.

Hmmm ..... searched Google for Climaxx and came up with a different kind of beads :0

Was someone looking for beads? I have some extra I can send if anybody needs them.

I wasa referring to this.

I always get a baby foor jar and empty it, fill it with beads and then dist. water. It does take up some room but it is one of the most maint. free ways out there.
Then again it may not be practical in a standard humidor, I'll shut up now.
