high humidity while seasoning?

Hi guys, First off i'd like to say thank you to the site for tons of information and my journey to smoking cigars ! I'm having a lil problem with my humidor though. i have a small 25-40 ct cigar humidor. i started to season it last week and i'm not sure if im having problems or not. I did countless searches on the site and other sites but no forum has given me a definite answer or if the humidity is okay.

History:

Right now, for the past week, the humidity is sitting at 75%+ and goes to higher sometimes. I have a analog gauge, and a basic humidifier. I did calibrate the gauge using the salt test and it measured 75% so that was fine. i put a Cohiba solution their 30/70 Solution to maintain 70% in my humidifier. For seasoning, I put a Saucer inside the humidor with distilled water.

my question is this: Is the Hygrometer suppose to read over 75% when first trying to season it or should it stay at 70% ? it's been a week, just wanted to make sure everything is going smooth for my humi !

thanks guys for the help !

much love from a fellow BOTL

Hello Thrilla.......................You might want to go iver to the introduce yourself here thread and make a post telling everyone a little about yourself. Even though I'm sure you have the best intentions, it's considered rude to start making post asking questions/making sales without an introduction. Fill out your proflie as well.

As far as your question, I would look into hearfelt industries beads. The basic humidifers always seem to be all over the place. The beads can be bought at 65 or 70.

Depends.

Is the seal good?

Is the Hydro near the solution - or away?

Can you try another hydro?

I'm not familiar with the 'Cohiba' solution.

Oh! Sorry, I misunderstood the question. I would just try out the humidor with the humidifier and see what she holds at then.

thanks guys for the response.

i just introduce myself, i apoligize for being so brief as i was at work.

grateful1- My humi is a Romeo y julieta, small cigar humi, i would think the seal is good =I. The hydro is right by the saucer as it is a small humi. maybe that could be the problem.... ill take pics of it.

some updated pics of the setup

Did you calibrate your hygro?

Search "salt test" or "hygro calibration" and I'm sure you'll find answers on how to do this.

Analog hygrometers don't work as well as the digitals, IMHO. I have a few Western Caliber IIIs and the Radio Shack Radio Controlled temp/hygro with three remote sensors and I find these work very well. All of them have been salt tested and I've marked each of the units with their respective amount of variance from 0 (or in this case 75%RH in accordance with the "salt test").

So Thrilla... you can do this the technical way or you can do it the Zen way (which on occasion I default to) and go by feel. I have never needed to soak my small 50ct humidor. It's maintaining a perfect 64%RH and has since I got it. I use a couple small tubes of Viper's 65% beads to ensure stability. The seal is good and I don't open it very much. Also, keeping it full of sticks helps to keep the RH level where I like it. So my guess is that the size humidor you have would not require long-term soaking with solutions or distilled water to 'season' it. Take all the solutions out and close it up. Throw some sticks in there and see how it goes in a week or two or three.

Good luck.

Trill, when You are seasoning your humi, the humidity can also jump to 80% and its not bad.
If it has a good seal it can be even higher.
You know, its impossible to keep 70% in empty humi just with some water, you will be ok with some smokes and beads inside :)

cool thanks guys for all the responses. I just bought a digital Hygrometer from my Local cigar shop. I did the salt test and its at 81%? Weird. i guess its =/- 5 %. So i dropped it in my humi and its reading 78% (i guess that means 73%) and the analog hygro is reading @ 70 %. Hmm we will see ina couple of days thanks!

i can tell you that the hygrometer you are using is not and probably never will be accurate. if you can, spend a few bucks and get a digital one, they tend to be more accurate and reliable.

thanks guys again for all the responses. just a quick update: i bought an Electric hygrometer from Madeline (sp?). I did the salt test on it, and its been sitting at 83% for the past 15 hrs, does that mean that the guage is off by =/- 8% ? Alot if you ask me, thanks guys

Quite frankly, I don't really trust the salt test very much. I never get consistent readings. I have heard great things about the calibration kits though. If you are really worried about the rh, I would look into those. Humipack has them.

Right now both of my hygro's read something like 71% in the salt test. I figure since both of them are reading the same rh, they must be close. Also, they read 61-62% in my humi and cooler with 65% beads, which further suggests... Get beads and forget about it. I sleep much better at night with heartfelt beads in my humi's. ;)

mr.mac thanks for the advice, i just pulled the trigger today, for those beads off vipers site.

I bought;

- 1lb of beads 65% w/bag for my coolador
- 1 ounce 60% for my small humi (for travel or fast mokes)
- 2 ounce 65% beads for my other humi
- 2 ounce 70% for my other humi.

HAAHAHAHAHA <evil laugh> man my fiance was so confused why I need so many, she'll see next week when i get them all hahah :whistling: :p
