I like them both but only have the gap for one ATM

So I'll let you decide ;)

I like the first one better.

Do either use filters? I know some of the Butz-Choquin do, but I don't think they all do. That might be something to consider based on your preference for or against them.

My wife likes the first one better too...

Does it matter? I don't put filters in my big ben either and its made to take a 9mm.

*edit* I could get the balsa wood filters you recommended to me a while back... they sell them at the shop I'm ordering from, I don't like the active charcoal ones, I think they make the smoke taste funny.

If it doesn't matter to you, it doesn't matter. Some people don't like filter pipes with or without the filters. The empty space can lead to a wetter smoke according to some people. I smoke my Big Ben without just as you do and I don't find it objectionable at all.

The balsa filters are the only ones I even consider using and I rarely use those. I do have one pipe that performs better with one, but I rarely smoke it.

First one is nicer. I almost purchased a similar Butz-Choquin pipe in NYC a month ago, but I didn't have the $$. Could have even been that model.

I like the first one. I would love to have something like that. How much is it?

Yeah they are back up... I ordered pipe number 1, and I'll pick up pipe number 2 come fall, as crappy as the weather is over here, that pipe cover will come in handy since I'm a outdoor only smoker.

I also picked up a pack of those Balsa wood filters Alan, I'll let you know what I think after giving them a try.

My order came to 96 Euro total, and they charge 4 euro shipping for anything under 100 euro... I was surprised how many good cigars go for 4 euro :sign: to round out the price ;)

That's a pretty sharp pipe Shawn, I hope you enjoy it. I'm still struggling with my pipe classifications, so what would that be classified as? Whatever it is, it sure is beautiful.

I like the second one. I had one very similar to it (a friend bought it for me in Austria). I broke it by accident a couple of years ago. Let us know how you like the one you choose!

I'd call that a Calabash. SEE HERE

THIS is a good reference for shapes and classification.

Thanks Alan, that's a lot more in depth than the one GLPease has on his site. Although his is a pretty good reference as well.

Its a great pipe, it holds a very large amount of tobacco and burns nice. My only complaint it the silliness of putting white wood around the inside rim of the bowl. I smoke outdoors and its always windy in Germany, that white has already charred itself black. I'm going to talk to a very talented woodworker I know and see if he can replace it with a metal ring.
