Hey all,

I just recieved my 1/2lb of 65% beads and I am excited! I got them with the mesh sleeve available on the site.

It says I should add .5 fl oz for 1/2lb of beads... is there an easy way to measure that with out a measuring cup? Whats the best way to introduce water to the beads... just pure it on the top beads?

Thanks all,
Daniel

Dan - Just spray em down with distilled. Rule of thumb for me is 60-70% clear, 30-40% white. I use a basic spray bottle from the grocery store. I typically have to spray em down about once every two weeks or so, depending on how many cigars I have and how often I'm in and out of the cooler/humi.

My only concern is this: way back when these beads started getting popular I remember hearing that if you add TOO MUCH water it will make them stop functioning. Is this true?

Sort of. Oversaturated beads will put out 65% moisture but not absorb any excess. So there is a chance for mold in oversaturated beads. But I keep mine 90% wet with no issues.

The beads don't stop functioning per se. The 65% beads are designed to try and "reach" 65% humidity. When the RH is less than 65%, they will allow water to escape, thus increasing the RH, until they are dry. When the RH is above 65% they will absorb water until they are saturated and unable to absorb any more. So, if you fill your container with water and saturate the beads, they won't be able to absorb any more water. You can "fix" oversaturated beads by doing something like, in my case (since I live in Minnesota and we have radiator heat and it is dry as hell in my house) leaving them outside of your humidor for a day :)

You are over-thinking this. Dump the beads in a bowl or dish, sprits or drizzle some distilled water on them until some of the beads are white and some are clear, stick the dish in your humi, go sleep soundly knowing your cigars are being loved.

edited to clarify distilled water rather than tap

Thank you for the insight!

Done :)

These gents have summed it up nicely. No worries Dan... thats why you got the beads in the first place! ;)

Yup... The beads fitted nicely in my top drawer. Once my two hygrometers are finished calibirating I'll post some feedback on the humidity in the top of my humidor.

I'll post a pic soon of my overall humidor set up to get everyone's opinion.

Pour or spray, either works. All overfilling them means is you'll probably have to take them out and let them dry for a few hours. I just got myself a pound of them and the little sleeve to go along for my coolerdor. Been using them in the tubes in my desktop for a long time.

They are a godsend and I'm glad to support a good BOTL like Viper!
