H. Uppman Magnum 46
Size: 5 5/8" x 46 rg
Wrapper: Cuban
Binder: Cuban
Filler: Cuban
Strength: Mild
I was gifted this cigar by Jon (Souldog) the first time I went to herf with him, and I must say right off the bat: you are a bad influence! I've had one Uppman prior to this, a Coronas Major Tubo, and I remember it being an absolute delightful array of flavors. I'm still very new to the world of ISOM's, so this will be a nice journey to the dark island for me. Thank you very much Jon for giving me the opportunity to try out a cigar I have read a lot about! You are a great botl my friend.
Pre-Light
I've heard it said that Cuban quality control and construction is not what it used to be, and while I can understand that as well as agree with it somewhat (mostly based off of photos and descriptions from others), this cigar could have fooled me into thinking that the opposite is true. Fairly light in the hand with a slight crunch when squeezed, there is no indication in touch that the cigar is under or overfilled. Construction is top notch, with the cigar being hugged by a beautifully applied soft, golden hued wrapper that has a light sheen of oils and is silky to the touch. The cap is traditional Cuban style triple seam, complimented by a well bunched foot that smells delightfully of hay and cane sugar sweetness. There is a small crack on the side of the cigar towards the middle portion that runs perhaps a quarter inch, though luckily my concerns that it would be an issue were unfounded.
Draw & Burn
On being punched, I found a good draw that I thought was a touch on the easy side, but this later proved to work to the advantage. The burn was impeccable throughout, burning razor sharp and revealing a solid, typical Cuban ash that was dark gray and almost black at points.
Flavor Profile
I expected this cigar to be at least a medium strength based off of the other reviews I have read on this particular smoke, but I was surprised at the mildness not only of the strength, but also the flavors themselves. This is not to say that they were muted or dull by any means, only that they were a light, almost airy and soft taste that teased the taste buds with complexity. I found zero spice in the smoke both in nose or mouth until the last inch and a half, at which point I did pick up a faint touch of pepper. Flavors ranged from hay, fresh baked bread, toasted nuts, mild leather, and light, sweet tobacco. I could swear I was picking up a honey like taste as well, though perhaps that was my senses keying in on the color of the wrapper and associating it more to that than anything. The finish was light, clean, and left behind a touch of leather and hay as well. The complexity of the smoke was wonderful, totally enjoyable, and was hitting the spot. Shant stated that the smoke had a nice, sweet smell as well as a hint of roasted peanuts to it. Interesting.
Overall Impression
A superb smoke, to say the least. Again Jon, thank you so much for the chance to burn this beauty. High marks all around, and while I love a strong, full flavored full bodied Nicaraguan as my go to, this cigar was a great change of pace for me and proved that even if you prefer the strong stuff, a great mild cigar is something to appreciate. It smoked cool down to the nub with zero harshness or bitter tastes, I hated to put this cigar down. I paired this cigar with a Coca Cola (the best cola!), and while it did the job, I'd love to smoke another of these with a mild cup of coffee with lots of creamer. I have a feeling I'll be getting more of these.
