I have done several trades with folks on CP and have gotten several H Upmann Mag 46s. I have never smoked this cigar...until tonight. My mate and I got home from an agility trial, ate dinner, built a fire in the fire-pit, and lit up cigars. I smoked a Mag 46 from 04.
H Upmann Magnum 46 (04)
This cigar has a bit darker wrapper than the others that I have received in trades. It was a very good looking cigar, with no noticable veins or seams. Very clean triple-flag cap. The pre-light nose was of sweet earth and loam, with just a hint of coffee...very nice. The pre-light draw was open, just about perfect.
The cigar lit very easily and draw stayed right where it started. Each puff brought mouthfuls of thick, rich smoke that just hung in the still evening air. The aroma was fabulous. The burn was very even throughout the smoking experience. The ash was light gray and very firm, staying on at least an inch at a time. The cigar did start to burn a little hot at the end, but a with a little patience, I was able to nub it down to my fingertips. Very well constructed cigar.
This cigar, to my palate, had a flavor profile similar to the H Upmann No. 2, just not as pronounced. It started with a sweet earthiness that settled into good coffee and wood. The earthiness came back and a certain sweetness joined in that was much akin to licorice. Near the mid-point, the cigar shifted back to a stronger coffee profile and finished out with the sweet earth predominant on the palate. A great tasting cigar.
Now I know why so many folks on CP seem to smoke these. A great cigar in a very nice size. Can't wait to smoke another. Due to the hot burn near the end, I can only rate this cigar an A.
