What a great day today! It was a perfect 80 degrees here in Orange County, with a nice breeze blowing to keep it from feeling too hot. Humidity was low, but not dry, and the sun was shining bright in the clear skies. I decided I had time to smoke a longer cigar today before work, so I settled on this stick that I had purchased a fiver of off C-Bid. I've been really, really wanting to try these for some time now, but as every cigar I have bought so far off C-Bid has had a bit of harshness that seems to dissipate after a month or so, I let these sit.
On inspecting the cigar, I found it to be well constructed, featuring a light tan, leather like wrapper that smelled of barnyard faintly, a neat cap, and the foot was well bunched. The wrapper itself was devoid of any major veins, though it did have a few faint ones running throughout, and was soft to the touch. I squeezed the cigar along its length, and found no hard or soft spots, only a good springy feeling. I clipped the end, and the perfect draw had a hay like flavor to it. I fired up the torch, toasted the foot, and then took a deep, long draw. On letting the smoke out through the mouth, and slightly through the nose at the end, I almost began sneezing from the sheer oomph of a load of spicy black pepper! Damn! :whistling: What was very surprising, is that despite the spicy pepper in the nose, and a ton of it on the back of the throat, I could still taste a very straight forward leather flavor, as well as hints of coffee bean and vanilla. Wow! I was surprised at the level of flavor in this smoke, as I had anticipated a possible letdown. The cigar was producing huge, billowing clouds of smoke that smelled of burning cedar and grass, which was very pleasant.
About an inch in the spice died down considerably, though it was still hitting the tounge and throat nicely, and the leather flavor became even more prominent. I've tasted leather in a cigar before, but never like this! This is very good so far, I hope it stays this way! The body is a medium for sure, and the finish is nice and long. The burn was fairly straight, at times going a little sideways but always self correcting, and revealed a white and gray ash that was very loose, falling off at a half inch. About a third of the way through, and a bit of spice that reminded me of pumpkin began to come and go. Very nice! As I moved into the second third, the pumpkin spice was gone again, this time being replaced by a taste that I can only describe and how a smoker loaded with hickory chips smells! Delicious! The leather flavor was still hitting strong, and the spiciness was also performing nicely with the other flavors. The final third was much the same as the second, which was fine by me! This cigar never got hot, bitter, nor did I have any draw issues whatsoever. I am thoroughly impressed with these thus far, and can only hope that the other four are this good!
