I smoked three different varieties of Gurkhas this weekend. I smoked the 1940 Pre-embargo robusto, the class regent robusto, and the Legend Anni. Here are my reviews:
1940
Short robusto rolled in the "old-style" with an unfinished foot. The wrapper was a dark chocolate and vein free. The wrapper was damaged (couple of splits and cracks). The pre-light nose was of mild coffee and earth. The pre-light draw was firm, but not bad.
The cigar burned well, staying even and cool. The ash was white and firm. In fact, I ashed the cigar only once throughout the entire smoke. The draw was a little firm, but still produced ample, thick smoke with each puff. The damage wrapper required only one minor touch up.
The flavors in this cigar were wonderful and complex. Initial flavors were of wood with hints of cinnamon. The spice stayed subtle as the wood intensified. At the 1/2 way mark, the cigar picked up flavors of raw cocoa and then creamy chocolate. The smoke literally coated the mouth w/ creamy flavor. At the back end, the wood intensified as the spice dissapated. Absolutely fantastic.
Class Regent Robusto
This cigar had a pre-light nose of sweet earth and peet. The pre-light draw was easy. The cigar burned cool and even, with no corrections necessary. The draw stayed easy, though the cigar did not produce as much smoke as I would have liked.
The flavor on initial light was a little harsh and bitter. However, it settled into some toasted flavors. The cigar had kind of an acidic undertone...not unpleasant, just noticable. The toastiness stayed as more coffee appeared at the 1/2 way point. The cigar ended with some mild charred wood and coffee flavors.
Good cigar, but overshadowed by the earlier smoke.
Legend Anniversario
This 6x60 perfecto looked fantastic. The wrapper was a dark brown and the pre-light nose was of earth and coffee. The wrapper showed only minor veins. The pre-light draw was open and free despite the small openings. The cigar performed beautifully...burning cool and even throughout. The draw was just about perfect and each puff produced mouthfuls of thick medium-to-full bodied smoke. The ash was firm and white. A very well constructed cigar.
The flavor was great from beginning to end, complex and full. Initial flavors were of toasted wood with some coffee undertones. As it developed, the cigar boasted some nice leather notes to mix with the wood and coffee. I describe this cigar as toasty, as this characteristic stayed throughout. At the 1/2 way mark, it developed some nice raw cocoa flavors to mix with the coffee. On the back end, the wood intensified and the toastiness picked up. Great smoke.
Hope you enjoy the reviews.
