Ring Gauge: a very scary 60 (that's about the size of a US quarter)
Length: 6 inches
Filler: Cuban seed Nicaragua and Honduras
Binder: Again, where do you find this stuff?
Wrapper/Color: An aged ('96) Maduro. It was a deliciously dark and oily
Wow, this baby was a monster of a cigar. Not only was it 6 inches long, but about as big around as a quarter (doesn't sound large, but trust me it is). The cigar itself was covered in a lovely dark maduro wrapper that gave off a pleasant earthy chocolate smell. Clipping this was bit difficult because all I have is a two blade cutter that has, well I guess it's probably a 61/64ths of an inch opening in it. I was afraid I'd damage it but somehow the cigar escaped unharmed. Lighting this thing was another chore. It's big and didn't want to light and it's a bit cold outside, so that wasn't fun at all. When it finally did light, voluminous amounts of smoke poured off this thing. The taste was a bit odd. It started with a nice toasty flavor with hints of bittersweet chocolate and pepper. It was a bit on the mild side actually. Within about 30 minutes (this thing takes a good hour and half to two hours to get through) it went from kind of mild, to a good medium body. It was a very sudden change, maybe within one or two puffs. Some molasses like sweetness developed with a stronger pepper and spice undertone. That hint of bittersweet chocolate was still there, but only just. The ash at this point had a death grip on the cigar and wasn't giving up. It got to be about 3 inches before it finally did fall off. I continued smoking, getting used to the new flavors when about 3/4's the way through something odd happened. My mildly sweet medium bodied cigar turned into a “good god” full flavored spicy cigar. It wasn't subtle, and it wasn't very nice of the cigar to do that to me. The pepper flavors really came out and the molasses sort of slid to the back of the palette. That chocolate aftertaste - it's gone, replaced by what I can only describe as a charcoal like toasted flavor. It was a bit of a harsh ending to what started as a sweet cigar. It was decent but a bit too large for my taste and the flavors were a bit to “all over the map” for me. I like a complex cigar but not one that takes me to opposite ends of the taste spectrum and not one this forceful in the journey.
