I think I may have committed a major newbie blunder ??? . I was checking out the auctions on cigarbid.com and came accross a box of 25 Gurkha 1940 pre embargo robustos. Now, I have tried a few other Gurkhas and really liked them. The guy at the cigar shop I go to really hyped the pre embargos. The bid was at $316.00. I looked on every site I could find these on and the cheapest I could find them for was $525.00. So I put a bid in thinking that if I got them for under $ 350.00 it would be a steal. I could keep a fiver and offer up the rest here. Besides, I thought I would probably never win anyway. Well, I ended up getting them for $333.00 including shipping. I immediately thought " this was just too easy". I then found a cigar forum where the consensus seemed to be that they were good cigars, but grossly over priced. I would greatly appreciate some feedback (yes, the time for feedback would have been before the auction  ). If it turns out that this is a good deal I will offer up fivers on the buy/sell/trade forum. If not, I'll just take my lumps and chalk it up to being an expensive lesson. It wouln't be the first time my impulsivity got the best of me.

You could piece the box box out and actually break even. Even serious cigar smokers will break down and buy a couple just to see for themselves. I doubt you'll find anyone jump at 5 packs. But 2 or 3 packs will generate more interest. $333/25=13.32, not too overly priced when doled out as a pair or trio. Yeah, probably chalk it up to a newbie blunder. But who knows, you may like em.

Gurkha does a great job. And i have heard nothing but good about these except like you said price. I have had at least one of all there production stuff and have yet to be dissapointed. actually if you do sell some of those i'll be the first to sign up or maybe you would rather trade either way i'm in.

I've liked the ones I've had but the price always kept me from buying many.

Those aren't a bad cigar - kinda rough looking, and definitely not worth the asking price. I would be interested in two or three of them if you decide to sell them in pieces - I wouldn't be interested in a 5er....

The price you paid isn't bad - certainly better that retail

One of my locals sells these very same sticks for $40/per :0

I paid $30.00 for one - the guy gave me a "deal"... I haven't fired it up yet because I like to save those high priced smokes for "special" occasions... If I was able to get them for a "reasonable" price, I'd be tempted to fire it up...

My luck, though, I'd have saved that puppy and found out it was a TRUE dog rocket....

Thanks for all the feedback. When I get them I will offer some on the buy/sell/trade thread for those who are interested.

Don't look now.....but.............

The Gurkha 1940 Series is made with certified Pre-Embargo Cuban tobacco. The leaves are 60 years old and the tobacco has been certified by Christie’s. The taste has been described as medium-bodied with a subtle spiciness. Production was limited and very few are available for sale on the market.

Completely different items, he got robustos and those you linked are toros. Not even close to the same thing. :sign: :sign: :sign:

7) “OUR CIGARS USE GENUINE PRE-EMBARGO CUBAN TOBACCO!”
Don’t buy it. While experts have varying opinions on several other subjects discussed here, on this one virtually all agree. The Cuban embargo happened in 1962, and no cigars or tobacco have been shipped to this country (at least, not legally) since then. Some U.S.-based cigar manufacturers did have the foresight to stockpile the raw material when they saw the Embargo coming, and did make cigars with actual Cuban leaf while supplies lasted. But those supplies, according to those in the know, are now long gone. Henry “Kiki” Berger, who spent years in the Cuban tobacco business before heading up his current cigar company, Tabacalera Esteli, in Nicaragua, is in favor of some kind of official authentication system for tobacco’s origin to prevent disreputable companies from deceiving consumers. “If there is any Cuban pre-embargo tobacco out there today, then I don’t exist,” he states unflinchingly. “There’s just no such thing. If there was any tobacco here from Cuba, it was gone during the Boom. [To claim otherwise] is just lying to the consumer.” As far as cigarmakers claiming the covert use of illicit Cuban leaf in their blends, pre-Embargo and otherwise? “Cuba doesn’t sell tobacco outside of Cuba anymore; they only sell cigars.”

That has me a little confooosed, I guess that "authenticity certificate" really means a lot. Or does it? ??? ??? ???

Wait........got it now....................    I won't edit out this stuff, still need to look at a few things.

OK, guys. Just let me know when I can take the dunce cap off and return to my seat   .

If these retail for between 30 and 40 per, which are the ones that retail for 100 (per!)?

Yeah, that's about right -- decent cigars, grossly over priced.

I've had the 1940s before. I really enjoyed them. The only reason that I didn't buy more of them was the price. I found them out in AZ for 18-26 a stick depending on size. I've had all of the sizes and consider them a very flavorful medium bodied smoke. Very elegant finish. If you got these for under 14 a stick, I would consider that pretty good. Still an expensive cigar, but something I would pay. If you offer these in 2s or 3s, I would be up for some.

Dawg Gone.
