In my pass, I added a Griffin's XX. It does not appear that anyone know what it is. To be honest, had it not been for my B&M shop, I wouldn't know what it was either. Griffin released a limited edition cigar in 2004 called the XX (20th anniversary). The cigar sat in our shop for a long time, until someone smoked it and raved about it. The cigar flew off the shelf. It was soooo bad that when the second shipment came in (I had heard about this "legendary" cigar from others in the shop). I was told when the second shipment had arrived (at about 10am). The guy at the shop said he hadn't priced them yet, and didn't know what the owner was going to sell them for. He told me there should be plenty for me when I came back later, because they had received a whole bunch of boxes... 5 hours later I returned and found ALL of them had been sold once they had been priced and put on the shelves. I was, needless to say, very upset... (such a silly thing for a cigar, but.. HEY!!!).
One of the regulars gifted me with two of them - and I was impressed!!! The cigar smoked very much like the Davidoff Millenium blend!!! Of course, that made sense since they are made in sister factories! And the price tag (about $10.00 retail) made them VERY attractive compared to the Millenium Blend Davidoff's. They only came in one size (I guess it would be the Corona Gorda (?) - about the same size as the AVO LE05).
Well - our shop just received their shipment of the Griffin XXI - the 2005 special edition. I was naturally curious about this cigar, because last years was so nice. This years XXI comes in a glass tube, and is packaged in boxes of 10. The retail is $10.50/stick at our shop (box price without tax was around $84.00).
So - I buy three out curiosity... First of all - the construction is incredible!!! It is nearly perfect - reminding me very much of the Davidoff construction (no surprise here, considering it is a product of Hendrik Kelner). It appears to be wrapped in a Connecticut shade wrapper - with a nearly flawless appearance. According to the write up, it a very complex blend with three different Dominican tobaccos in the filler and a great looking Connecticut-shade wrapper. Mild to medium in body. These again only come in one size - the Corona Gorda I would call it (6 x 50). It was not too tight, and not too loose. Pre light draw was just the way I like it!!! Great pre-light taste - somewhat sweet and earthy. The first few draws were incredible. Tons of thick rich smoke - with a mild body at first which slowly built to a medium body about halfway through the cigar. The finish was just the same as halfway through. The flavors were pleasant and complex - most noteably I tasted a mild cedary flavor, as well as a mild sweetness. None of the flavors were overpowering the others - and the flavors blended very well. This is not a powerful smoke by any means, but it is just a very pleasant smoke - from beginning to end!
I went back today and picked up a box of 10. They tell me they have already sold over 25 boxes in a few days. I have a feeling that these will not be on the shelves for long, because there were only 6,500 boxes produced.
If you are a fan of mild to mild-medium smokes - this one is for you. If you are a fan of complex, but not overpowering smokes - this one is also for you. I would also say this would please the person who really likes a full bodied smoke, but likes an occasionaly nice complex medium bodied smoke (like me!).
