I recently got a wild hair for carving my own pipe. So I ordered a carve-your-own solid block of meerschaum, went to the wood working store and got some carving tools and went at it. Granted the image in my head and the skills in my hands are not on the same level so it looks a bit rough (Figs. 1-3). It still looked OK and I was pleased with my efforts. I took a break from carving and let it sit overnight with plans of sanding and finishing the next day. When I picked it up I noticed a crack in the stem (Fig. 4). The good news is I contacted Tobacco Barn, where this was purchased, and they promptly (two e-mails one with a pic) said to send it back and they would replace it. I'm happy to see good, prompt service. In my novice opinion I would recommend them for anyone looking to carve your own, with the caveat it is a novice's opinion.
If any of you have suggestions on the carving of this, I'd like to hear it. Not so much in design, but rather the actual technique.
