Hey,

We're leaving this weekend to go on a vacation to the Dominican Republic at an all inclusive resort. All these resorts have humidors and sell cigars.

These resorts are also VERY.. *VERY* smoker friendly (trust me people are lighting up INSIDE the airport when getting off the plane).

I am an ex cigarette smoker and have quit last year due to a unrelated health scare so I will never smoke ciggs again.

I have never smoked cigars before but can't imagine having the same vacation experience without smoking. If you've ever had Dominican coffee in the morning while smelling the tropical air while having that first morning smoke, then you know what I mean.

I know nothing about buying cigars and don't know what to buy when I'm down there. Here is how I would like to smoke:

-I would like to smoke with MORNING COFFEE! Yum! About a 30-45 min session before heading to the beach. So I guess I might have some cigar left over? Do I need a box to store it in?

-At lunch around 1pm or so, maybe light up again while drinking some diet cola. I don't like alcohol during the day.

-Around 6pm start drinking. I like champagne and beer. However, you can get anything for free at the bar so if there's something I should be drinking to compliment the cigar then please let me know. The alcohol is all Dominican labels.

-I might be smoking just casually walking around just to hold something and play with it.

Is there anything wrong with my plan? Is there something I should know? What can I expect. And what kind of cigars would you recommend I buy. They wont be able to speak English very well there so I need to know before I go down what to buy when I am there. Oh also what tools will I need. Whatever you guys recommend, I'll do. Also do you guys think I should bring cigars back? How would you recommend I buy the cigars? A package? singles?

Don't inhale!

Enjoy your trip!

My first piece of advice to you while in the DR is to avoid the temptation to buy “Cuban” cigars. If you know nothing about cigars it will be nearly impossible to tell real from fake. I honestly don’t know that I could always pick out real and fake cigars, and I’ve been doing this hobby for a few years. There are several good cigar manufacturers based out of the Dominican Republic, and I would assume (I’ve never actually been there) that their cigars would be pretty available. Look for cigars made my Fuente, Avo, or Davidoff. If you want a 30-45 minute smoke with your morning coffee, pick up some petite corona, or corona sized cigars. Possibly even a robusto. I would recommend against you keeping the cigar after you’ve smoked part of it, as it will just develop nasty tastes/smell after it’s been put out for a while. You’re better off just sticking with smaller sizes and tossing them when you’re done. Champagne can actually pair very well with Davidoff and Avo cigars, but some other good pairings with cigars are scotch, bourbon, and rum. The flavors in all of those tend to compliment cigars, without overpowering them for the most part. The only tools you will need are a cigar cutter, and a lighter, both of which you should be able to pick up there and will be less hassle than trying to take them on the plane. If you purchase a handful of cigars to keep with you, or to bring back, you might want to take a Ziploc bag or a small Tupperware container, and pick up a Boveda humidity pack to keep in the bag with them.

Hey thanks for the advice.

I already know not to inhale. Is there any flavors I should be looking at as a newbie that might be an overall good cigar? Can cigars make me feel sick since I haven't smoked in a year?

Can you tell me how to smoke it properly? Like how long to draw and how to blow out the smoke. How long I have to hold it in my mouth. I'm sure it's much different than cigarettes. hehe..

Also do people dislike cigar smoke? Basically should I smoke it near people on the beach or should I only smoke it when going for a walk. Oh yes the beaches are fairly windy.. can I smoke in the wind?

What they said. They've given you very good information and about as much as you can use on such short notice. Grateful1 is serious about not inhaling. Cigars are too strong and ex-cigarette smokers are prone to inhaling and quite often don't do well when trying to switch to cigars. Oh, and avoid the glass top Cohibas ;)

Yes they can. Its called Nicotine Poisoning. Just have something sweet like candy to eat. Some symptoms is nausea, vomiting, and being dizzy. Again, if this happens just stop smoking the cigar and eat something with sugar in it. If you can, lay down for a little bit. Then you will be good to go once again.

This may come off as being rude or curt, but you're waaaaay over-thinking this. Cigars are all about enjoyment or relaxation. Buy the cigar, cut the tip with a blade, light the other end, and smoke it. That's it. It need not be any more complex than that.

I'd buy a travel humidor and buy some smokes locally before traveling. Anything you get down there is likely to be way overpriced and/or fake. Plus you can get a few smokes in before you go to see if this is even to your liking.

Have a fun trip. :)

Thanks! Great tip for a cure, usually happens to me one time when I get back into the spring swing.

Aside from the cigar advice, heed the signature of one of the other posters and ...Don't Drink The Water!! Stick with bottled water if you can, especially if you're outside of the resort. You DON'T want that problem!!! he he !! I speak from experience! :whistling: :0
