I have to agree with AVB on this one---this is a fantastic whiskey.
Neat, it's pure fire on the tongue, opening up to all kinds of tightly knotted, complex flavors. Ice cube added and swirled, it starts to open up to butterscotch, licorice, toffee . . . and a characteristic bourbon sweetness I just call, perhaps inaccurately, "corn." Oh, and lots of oaky char.
I drink most things the same way, however---rocks glass, with rocks, half spirits, half club soda. I know, I know . . . but I know what I like, and yes, actually, I can still taste the differences.
Like the Thomas Handy Cask Strength Rye, the Stagg served this way, for the first quarter of the glass or so, tastes like . . . well, like straight, undiluted, fine bourbon, full of rich flavors and deep complexities. As the dilution begins, it begins to open up, and a symphony ensues. I'm absolutely loving the way it opens up and changes as the drink progresses.
Of course, served this way, one drink equals two, more or less. And I'm on my third glass.
Find it, buy it, drink it. That's all I've got to say about it.
