General Question on Peoples Cigar Quantity...

I've been reading a few posts lately about people buying cabinets, and multiple coolers. Heck, even had the pleasure of checking out Swifty's coolidor, quite impressive.

So my question is, will anyone ever actually smoke all those cigars? Or is it the obsession of collecting/buying, satisfying the need to always have a boat load of cigars?

Cuz I have 2 humis (100ct) stacked full. I just did 2 box splits, about to do a 3rd. Why...? Why do I have an urge to buy more, and more, and more. And I'm only talking about 150 sticks total...which is nothing.

Im trying to find the logic behind it...so I can understand this concept behind the avid BOTL's collection.

Fire away.... ;)

you're not alone, we meet on thursdays.

there is no reason, no logic. just dont fight it, it'll cost less.

while you're stockpiling, the cigars you've gathered (and haven't smoked) are aging under your care.
the more you have, the easier it is to let more and more age before you smoke them.

plus, whoever dies with the most toys wins. :p

For me, I have tried a lot of cigars and now know what I like. I'm not too interested in sampling a ton of different cigars at this point (except ISOMs, as there are a bunch I haven't tried yet). I certainly don't have the collection many on here have but I have enough that I will probably never smoke them all.

So, why do I keep buying? It's partially the thrill of the hunt for me. There's nothing better than finding a good deal on smokes you know you like and it's even better to find the rare ones (in stock at MSRP). I am now trying to aquire boxes of the good stuff I like (PAM Exclusivo, Anejos, ISOMs) for aging. I can fit 2-3 dress boxes and a cab yet in my 2nd Barrister humidor, along with probably 50-60 singles in my 1st Barrister. My desktop (Fuentes and Padron) is chock full. Once I fill the two Barristers I will be done buying for awhile as my wife will shoot me dead if I have to buy another one (just bought the 2nd last month).

im kinda in the same boat. ive smoked now long enough to have my 5 or 6 favorite brands. and then i fell like i need every vitloa of that particular cigar. so when i find a good deal on a box, ill pick one up. i just like opening my humi and having more than just a few choices on what to smoke.

as for smoking them all. id say for every cigar 1 i smoke.... i give away 3.

For me I am new to the Cigar hobby and am trying as much as I can. I have a very very limited budget but I make do. I have about 35-40 sticks in my hummie now. If the budget was more flexible it would be much more. I think there is a collecting aspect behind it for me also. I love getting new sticks and adding them to my hummie, watching the stock pile grow. But I also like to try different things and for me now, being so new to the cigar world, I like to have different options when I pull a stick out to light up. Also I love introducing my friends to this great hobby of ours so having some around to hand out is always good. Will I smoke them all myself as the collection grows…. Probably not but they will all get light up either by me or a friend. Sharing the joy of our chosen hobby with others is a big part of it and you can’t share unless you have something to share. This is just my thoughts on it. I by far do not have a huge or even big collection because of budget but I think my mind is in the right place. :)

For me, I prefer the cigars out of my fridge-a-dor over something I buy at the shop. My fridge is kept at 68 degrees +/- 2 degrees and humidty is pretty locked in at %66 RH. So Pretty much set up perfect for ageing.

I love trying new cigars and buy singles from the local guy at least once a week when home. When I fin something I like, I'll go back and half a dozen and toss the into the cedar boxes I have for singles. I go back once ever 2 weeks and sample one. This way I get an idea of roughly how long they have to site before they taste really really good. If I like em after this process I buy a box.

As you can see, it is easy to build quite a collection doing it this way. Some cigars don't taste any better after 2 months in the fridge. If I still like them I just make a mental note as to just buy singles of those from the store when I want that flavor.

And then it comes to cigars that are for collecting. I do have quite a few in my collection that are strictly for collecting. My "collecting" stash is mainly comprised with select Habana singles, and other rare cigars such as Opus, Maduro Hemmingway, Anejo, and limited edition cigars that are either produced seasonally or in short supply.

Oh yeah, I do intend on smoking almost all my cigars that I actually dont give away.

When I'm browsing shops on the internet I like to dream about owning so many of the cigars. When buying cigars (cheap ones) I have an urge to buy better ones, but so far I've been able to keep it under control. I buy mine for smoking. I don't age cigars that much yet, unless I was to buy a box of some that might be worth it.

I'd like to call it a disease, that way it's not really my fault... :whistling:

BINGO!

some cases of said disease are simply more chronic than others. :D

ha! I only have a 100 count now! I gifted my 50 count to a friend starting out. I only smoke out of it, and I think a few people on this board could say I am able to smoke all 100 + in there!

I dunno, I think I can speak for a lot of people here, I can definately smoke all the cigars in humidor. LOL

When I got my big humi it looked a bit empty with 4-500 sticks in it so I started buying, Now I have a little more control and I can see it going down from a high of 1200 to 700 or so. That's enough to have some age and keep a good variety.

I've been trying to buy stuff I like, in a quantity such that I can smoke a few now, and let the rest of them sit in the cooler for a while. Been banding them with dates, box codes, etc.

The nO0b sampler really did me in....great, aged smokes.....wow. I got seriously bit by the "bug" at that point and have been trying to put fun stuff away while keeping enough in the desktop to smoke now and then.

Just finished a cognac and a Partagas Short ISOM that I bought a couple of months ago. Trust me....keep them "under your control" for a few months and it's a no lose deal. Good sticks do get better with even a little time on their side...

I've probably got 100+ sticks in the two humis I have, and probably 2-300 in the cooler...modest by many folks collections. Everything from cheap sticks to the really neat stuff. It's fun having choices when it comes time to choose a great smoke...

...will I smoke them all? Heck yes!! Some of the "experemental" cigars I bought when I was learning the ropes are still great ones for friends that drop by that are noObs to cigar smoking but want to try something decent. I finally figured out the best thing to do with slightly less than stellar smokes is to give them new cigar buddies...notice I said "give" not "trade" or "sell"......

Cheers - B.B.S.

I'm guessing I got around 300 or so. I've got two 48q coolers, and just like buying them to age. I've finally got a nice stash thats a year or more old, so Im not smokin new stuff by now.

I guess the reason to have so many is to be able to share with the rest of the group. I like to play the poker tornaments when I get the time, and unfortunately I lose a lot! :whistling:

Im heading outside to fire one up right now, been a long day.

But you're a good loser!

p.s., I put my address in my post on the holdem forum :D

For me, like some of the other's posted here, it's the thrill of the hunt. I know what my favorites are (Opus X, Padron '64/'26, La Aurora), so when I find them cheap I just buy them. I only smoke once a week so I buy way more than I will ever smoke. Also, I drive all over for business so I have the opportunity to walk into all kinds of "Cigar Stores". The strip mall shops are the best...you never know what you'll find for way below retail that I just "have to buy". Latest finds...(10) Opus X Perf. #4...$5.50 Cali price, (7)Partagas 150 AA's $10 Cali price. I love that...it's very addicting. And I'll just keep on looking!

I buy a 5er of white owls every week. That is the extent of my collection.

I don't smoke at all, ever.
I live vicariously through the people who post reviews of cigars they've smoked, using my vivid imagination.
