SO, the Aristocrat is at 65%, 65 degrees, and has been for some time. I open up one of the singles drawers...and what do I find on some of my nicest smokes...but a significant amount of mold! Now, three of these cigars are pretty new to my collection, and it was on those three that the worst of my mold problem centered, so I guess that they were the culprits for bringing in the spores.

Now, I have never had a mold problem before...do I need to go home tonight, empty the whole humi and wash it out? I already took out the humidification/ air moving device and am going to wash it thoroughly and change the wick.
I have segregated the cigars that were affected, and will briush them off and smoke them all soon (shame, as some of them are quite rare and special).

Anyone know if the Peltier unit might need to be cleaned somehow?

On the plus side, not knowing if the affected cigars will just conitune toget wose, I forced myself to smoke one of them this weekend, jsut in case the rest are ruined by further growth...yummy early 80's Davidoff....just the thing before a Dropkick Murphys show.

Ya, I think I could handle a little mold on an 80's Davidoff! ;)

No doubt. I had to smoke one on Saturday in case the rest turn into a LOT of mold. We shall see. I'm going to move the remainders to very isolated housing until I smoke them....sooner than I was going to, but so be it.

I thought sodium metabisulphate might do the trick on your Peltier heat sinks. Homebrewers use it in solution as a "no rinse" sterilizer in beer making. However, I'd be concerned about sulpher dioxide as a by product.

How about just plain old hydrogen peroxide? It should sterilze without harming the cigars.

Hydrogen peroxide would bleach the wood. Not good I would think.

Doc.

I coulda sworn you were gonna go for a rhyme here Doc...

How much wood could a wood-chuck chuck, if a wood-chuck could chuck wood...

I think I'll be shooting Bob S an e-mail today to ask his opinion.
Josh,
What did Bob S. have to say about cleaning up the mold?
Mold or not I'd smoke them, as long as it wasn't covered in blue/green penicillin like growth. Other than that I'd wipe it off first then sit back and enjoy :D

I think everyone would be amazed at what your actually smoking..

I read an article on lettuce a while back and on average how many bugs are eaten annually. The numbers were staggering. They blamed it on the demand for fresher produce, go figure.

I haven't actually sent that e-mail yet. Things got a tad busy over here, and I'll be giving ob acall on my drive home. I'll let you all know what he says.

White fuzzy mold. . .no big deal. Wipe it off, seperate sticks and you should be okay. My WOAM are still mold free after I've cleaned them. I've heard that UV light can kill mold spores in the air. Of course UV light will also probally destroy any naked cigars you have. ;)

Send any moldy Cuban davidoffs my way and I'll smokem for you  .
