Fuente Fuente Opus X

I smoked my first and most likely last Fuente Fuente Opus X just a few moments ago.

Against my better judgement, I carried one of these overpriced sticks home from a local shop after work this afternoon.

The first 2/3rds of this smoke was a very tight draw; the taste was nothing special. The final 1/3 would be worth about half the price paid. Good draw, increasingly complex and pseudo enjoyable. I'd much rather spend about half the price on a CAO Belicoso.

I may still be spoiled by my the recent pleasure of an H. Upmann Connaisseur No.1, but I feel strong about voting this cigar to be one of the most overrated.

Oh Boy!! More for me... if you have any others, feel free to pass them along to me for proper disposal... :whistling:

Seriously (actually, I WAS srious!) I enjoy the OpusX line... the xXx being my fav. I have yet to have one with any kind of draw problem, and the flavor is always spot on and delicious - to me.

I would say that you may have gotten a rare bum Opus... don't count them out yet. I never say Yea or Nay on a cigar without trying them at LEAST 2 times, so you can be absolute sure that what you are thinking is correct.

Of course, it may be just that they do not do anything for you, which in that case more for me!

Most likely way too wet. Next time, lose it in the humi for a few months plus and then review it.

I agree, if the storage conditions for this cigar were the slightest bit suspect, I would have parked it in my humi for a while. I know it had been at 70% for a long time. (at least several months) I will probably give this legend one more shot, just not anytime soon.

Smoking an Opus X right off the shelf is never recommended, retailers keep them way too wet. Opus need to be stored like Cubans because of their thick wrappers. Once you get them down to the low 60's they burn perfectly. The Fuente Fuente is my favorite sized Opus and at 9 bucks a stick it is far from over priced.

Glad you enjoy your CAO's, more Opus for the rest of us.

I smoked a Perfection X last night and it was outstanding. I think you need to give the Opus another try and then make your decision whether you like it or not. If you don't like them I have opened the Fuente Fuente Opus X Rescue Center for all orphaned and unwanted Opus X. :sign:

Spot on. You would notice a world of difference with a 60% Opus X including a much better draw. This takes weeks by the way, not days. Personally I use 8 weeks (minimum) as a guideline.

Agree with the other posters - score another OpusX, and let it sit for at least two months, six+ being better. Try 'er again....I think you'll be amazed.

...as of late, I'm finding that all my smokes, OpusX, Padron, ISOM alike, all seem to smoke lots better when stored for a few weeks in the very low 60's, rather than the high 60's where my coolers run. I'm going to try to store / age just under 70%, but keep my "go to" humi around 60% where the smokes will sit for at least a month before I smoke them.

I totally agree with what The Master say's. They need to be kept like ISOM's and the Fuente Fuente is MY favorite size. You might like the xXx better.

I was fortunate to get a box of Opus X #5 at a good price. Although only the size of a Petite corona, the cigar lasts for over an hour - I guess this has something to do with the thick wrapper. This is a great smoke, gets better into the second half and excellent the last quarter, one of the best smokes I have had. I agree with the posts though, stored in the humi for a while, the cigars smoke a lot better.

Prior to smoking my first Opus X I was told that they are over priced and not worth the bucks. I disagree! Sure, price does not always dictate the quality of the smoke but in this case, in my opinion, Opus X is worth the few extra dollars.

If anyone can get a box of any Opus X at a good price, either as a split or I'll take the whole box, please let me know.

Brian

They suck, stay away from them. The Anejo's are even worse - never buy them. In fact - let me know when and where you find them so I dispose of them and save other's from these horrible abominations!

I have had 10 opus in my humi for about 6 months and just smoked a perfection X tonight and loved it,one of my favorites to date.

I received a Opus X # 5 from Cigardawg (newbie sampler) and I thought it was excellent!! Give it another chance!

Hey B.B.S.

I'm finding this to be true as well. The cigars I store at a lower RH have been burning and smoking much better than the cigars at a higher RH... A little experimentation goes a long way!

enjoy!

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT!!!!! I'll get another and stash it away with my ISOM's. I'll report back in 4-6 months. I'm also going to consider dropping my RH from 70 down to mid 60's. I never considered this would make such a difference. Thanks!

Matt

I love Opus cigars, as long as they have at least a year of age on them. I do not like them at all when they are fresh. Maybe your tastes are like mine in that regard. I am not a real fan of CAOs or domestic H. Upmanns, however.

And as a rule, I keep my humidors around 69/69. I almost never have problems with burn or drawm (or taste) due to my cigars being too wet whether they are ISOM or domestic.

I love Opus X when they are young. Younger the better for me. I try to smoke a Opus X once a year because the experience of smoking one is really a moving experience. My last one I smoked was in Oct 2005 while in Honduras. One of the very few cigars i would love to smoke every day but i treat myself with one of these when some thing big needs to be celebrated. :D
