Four Roses Barrel Strength Limited Edition Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey 40th - Celebrating 40 years of Jim Rutledge, Master Distiller
13 1/2 years old, 750ml, $60 list price, 1442 bottles released (this is #64/1442), cask 15-1B, 100.4 proof, available only at limited locations in Kentucky and New York.
A chemical attack from Skydivnekd put a bottle of this in my hands late Friday night when I got home. Since I was leaving early Saturday I didn't have a chance to crack it open until I got back today. If you read my review of the Four Roses Single Barrel you can believe I had high hopes for this Limited Edition; the oldest bottled Four Roses in a few decades.
10 casks were dumped to come up with the 1442 bottles worth. Proofs varied from 99.6 to 104.6 but all are a deep copper color. Four roses uses 10 different bourbon recipes but which one this might be is unidentified and is unknown if it is even the same as the standard Single Barrel.
The nose is similar to the standard edition with a bit more cinnamon and less cherry noticed. After pouring in my glass and letting it sit for a few minutes tasting reveals a "hotness" that isn't in my standard edition with an even greater cinnamon content. Flavors of oak and licorice sort of pop out but without a binding flavor to tie them together. There is a lack of smoothness compared to the standard version. While not wholly disappointing, this isn't the über-bourbon that I expected from a Four Roses Single Barrel in honor of their master distiller. Even with these faults this is still a better bourbon then the vast majority out there. As a pure collectible it might be worth tracking down if you plan to keep it for 20 years or so. As a drinking bourbon, I'd say buy the standard edition at half the price.
Still, I greatly appreciate Floyd tracking one of these down and bombing me with it. It will get drunk and sooner then a bunch of others in my collection.
