A chemical attack from Skydivnekd put a bottle of this in my hands late Friday night when I got home. Since I was leaving early Saturday I didn't have a chance to crack it open until I got back today. If you read my review of the Four Roses Single Barrel you can believe I had high hopes for this Limited Edition; the oldest bottled Four Roses in a few decades.

10 casks were dumped to come up with the 1442 bottles worth. Proofs varied from 99.6 to 104.6 but all are a deep copper color. Four roses uses 10 different bourbon recipes but which one this might be is unidentified and is unknown if it is even the same as the standard Single Barrel.

The nose is similar to the standard edition with a bit more cinnamon and less cherry noticed. After pouring in my glass and letting it sit for a few minutes tasting reveals a "hotness" that isn't in my standard edition with an even greater cinnamon content. Flavors of oak and licorice sort of pop out but without a binding flavor to tie them together. There is a lack of smoothness compared to the standard version. While not wholly disappointing, this isn't the über-bourbon that I expected from a Four Roses Single Barrel in honor of their master distiller. Even with these faults this is still a better bourbon then the vast majority out there. As a pure collectible it might be worth tracking down if you plan to keep it for 20 years or so. As a drinking bourbon, I'd say buy the standard edition at half the price.

Still, I greatly appreciate Floyd tracking one of these down and bombing me with it. It will get drunk and sooner then a bunch of others in my collection.

Sometimes I think something will be really popular and it falls flat and other times I think the review is of something so common and mediocre that nobody will want to read about it and it gets a thousand views.

Thanks for the review AVB. I've never had any of the four roses bourbon, so I'll have to give it a try.

Sounds good, if anyone has another extra bottle I could buy PM me as it is not avail. around here.

I agree. I'm sure more people would comment if they had the chance to try more of these whiskies you review. Even though I don't always comment I appreciate you taking the time to write it all down for us.

You do a marvelous job!

We had a group buy a few months back, somebody from Kentucky, that was for the Four Roses Small Batch. :)

Great review, Ray. Sorry to hear that it was not the uber-bourbon that you were expecting. Still, I cannot wait to try it. A little bird told me that I have a bottle with my name on it somewhere in Kentucky. :p

Great Review, I will be looking for one of these on my annual Thanksgiving Trip to Kentucky.

Bottles ( a few ) are still available at some stores in Louisville. The Louisville stores appear to have received bottles from barrels 17-1d and 17-1f. I have not found any other numbers in this area. If you want the 40th anni bottles you better hurry! I heard a rumor that a few might also be available in the Four Roses gift shop at Cox Creek.

I offered to work on a trade with another Cigar Pass group last week. I picked up 2 bottles on Monday and 4 on the way home this evening. All 6 were $59. The Four Roses gift shop was charging list at $60. Several stores have a few bottles each ranging from $59 to $69.

BTW Liquor Barn stores in Louisville have regular Four Roses Single Barrel on sale for $26.

Well, If anyone can has a source on any more of this stuff let me know. I would be looking at 1 or 2 bottles. If you were to pick it up for me we could work something out in cash or smokes your choice.

Thanks,

Damon

Where is the gift shop? Is it near Cox Creek park in Louisville?

Steamboat
Cox Creek is where Four Roses warehouse aging and bottling facility is located. The plant is a few miles east of the Jim Beam plant in Clermont KY.
Cox Park is located in Louisville and was named for the Atilla Cox family that donated the land to the city.
If you want a bottle of the FR 40th try Top Hat Liquors on Lexington Rd. in Louisville. Top Hat had 3 bottles on Tuesday evening. $59

Thanks, I am pretty clueless about KY. I will try to get over there. It is good trading material. My friend that runs the charity is looking for some and he gets his cigars wholesale so I can probably make a trade that benefits us both..
