Well, i've been toying with the idea of getting into cigars ever since my first one a few months ago. I love the sophisticated feel to it, the manly feel, the calm relaxing atmosphere it creates, and above all, the great bonding and friendship that goes along with smoking with some friends.

After getting the opportunity to smoke a few cigars i decided to pick up some dutch masters and white owls at my local gas station... well this didnt really do it for me. I knew they werent real cigars, but honestly, i didnt think it was THAT bad, probably due to my general ignorance in the cigar world. Anyways, after much research, and a lot of new knowledge (mostly thanks to this great forum) i headed down to my local Tinderbox.

I compiled a list of cigars that were recommended as good "bang for the buck" cigars, and a few classics loved by most smokers. The store employee was eager to assist me, but not intruding like some stores. I enlisted his help, because i quickly became overwhelmed. I told him that i was a fairly new smoker, and most of what i have had so far were mild cigars, but i was very interested in trying everything.

I planned on picking up some sort of sampler, and a few 5 packs. Sadly, the store only had singles or boxes for sale, and no samplers (which i half expected). The prices were a little high compared to what i saw on the internet, but i also was prepared for this. Trying to keep it under 100 dollars, here is what i got:

Padron 4000 Md. ------------ smoked this today
Padron 1964 Exclusivo
La Floria C Churchill (natural)
La Floria C Churchill (maduro)
3x Feunte 858 Md
3x Baccarat Toro
Montecristo White #2 toro
rockey patel edge battalion
rockey patel sungrown toro
oliva G nt dbl rob
oliva V nt dbl toro
2x St. Luis Rey belicoso
Tatuaje Red Havana Artis

plus a cigar cutter (to replace the pocket knife) and a drymist humidifier
The employee helped me get a large box with a good seal and explained how to use the drymist and keep my cigars in good condition. Its fine to read how online but actually seeing it in person helps a lot too.

My experience with the Padron:
started off a little spicy, didnt really seem that special, then it became creamy and smooth, i liked that a lot. Anyways, when i got down to the last 3 inches i started to feel a bit queasy. The clerk also told me to be weary of this, especially with the RP sungrown, the tatuaje and most all cigars from nicaragua. Anyways, i didnt want to waste anything so i continued till the end. After smoking i threw up three times in a row. I was totally unprepared for this, as i have smoked a decent bit... i assume its because that was my first quality cigar. I rarely ever throw up, even when i get quite sick. Afterwards i felt a little better, but lightheaded and a bit shaky. Then i looked online about nicotine poisoning, which didnt helped, just freaked me out learning that a half cigar is a lethal dose if i were to get ALL the nicotine out of it. Now i must add, i know how to smoke a cigar, i didnt inhale it into my lungs. I didnt space out puffs the suggested 60 seconds for a new smoker, but i did take my time. The entire cigar took 1hr 30 minutes to smoke (was a churchill i believe). It was a good cigar, i tried to give it my full attention as i sat on my back porch, listening to some calm music, and drinking a glass of OJ. Unfortunately, i cant say it was a great experience... anything ending with my hurling my bowl of Chili into the bushes is just not the relaxing experience i was shooting for.

This was totally unexpected, and i am a bit disappointed now. I was hoping that you guys could suggest maybe a "smoking list" or something of the sort so that i can work my way up from mild to full bodied and hopefully this will not happen again.

Thanks in advance, because i know ill get some great advice from you guys.

Do not try an La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero if the Padron 4000 knocks you around. Hang in there, It will get better .

I would say that next time you start to feel queezy put the cigar down and take a break. Your nicotine tolerance probably needs to build up a bit.

X2 on the DL, I just smoked one today and it kicked my ass.

Make sure to smoke on a full stomach. Also, do smoke when your feeling weak/sick to begin with. The nicotine will just make it worse

I liked Padron x000 maduro and 8-5-8 maduro a lot when I first started to smoke. Actually I still like them a lot now.

this may have had something to do with it. i felt weak to start with... i hadnt had any sleep the night before.
Im hoping that this was it, otherwise i feel like a wuss... heh. Im not a small guy, and i can handle most things very will. it surprised me.

Eating sugar will kill that feeling real quick.... ie: spoon full, candy, etc..

Smoking while your sick is like running a mile on a broken foot....It just doesn't end well.

Bummer of a start. When you feel it climbing on ya like that, it's time to stop, chill, eat a square of chocolate. Not too sure about OJ as a beverage choice.

I notice a lot of your choices are toros and churchills and big honkers. I'd suggest starting off with robustos; something mild but tasty like the RyJ Bully. There'll be plenty of time for those others when you've built up a bit more tolerance.

Like others have mentioned, if you are going to smoke something fuller, do it on a full stomach. I usually have a cola (Jones Natural Cane Soda) when I smoke a fuller cigar. As far as cigars that you can use as stepping stones for the power punchers, I would recommend the Ashton Heritage Puro Sol, Padilla Obsidian, and Por Larranaga Cuban Grade. It's a shame your address isn't in your profile.

I agree with the comment to try smaller cigars if you're just starting out. Also, consider milder smokes. Then, you can gradually try others as you get more experienced.
Some brands to try:
Davidoff
Rocky Patel Vintage 1999
Arturo Fuente 8-5-8

Also, ask your B&M owner for some other mild to medium smokes.

Yeah definately start out with some smaller smokes, and it wouldnt hurt to go milder either try a couple sticks with full flavor and not as much body and work your way up. You wont have that problem soon, this summer I tried my first Oliva Serie V yeah i got i guess you can say "buzzed" of it i just had to go lay in the AC for a lil while and it was fine. Just dont rush enjoy what you smoke you shouldnt have to suffer through anything thats not what its about. Its good to try new though you never know what you will end up liking.

Today's lesson? bigger isnt always better. Heh, i was thinking about that while i was in the store. I knew what i was picking up would be a long smoke, which appeals to me. I like the idea of sitting down for while and enjoying a cigar. however, as stated, a cigar is meant to be enjoyed. It also seems to be a better value for a lager cigar... i can easily get a twice as long smoke for only a bit more (i blame mcdonalds and their super size option :p )

I'll surely be trying some smaller sizes next time.

As for the address, it isnt really convenient to put my home address while im off at school. I have a university PO box... ill have to look into that a bit more (think it changes each semester and the semester just ended).

The advice is much appreciated, thanks guys.

I agree with just about everything said

Start Milder and smaller. Work up from there.

Keeping something sweet on hand also helps ALOT when you start to get that feeling.

I remember the first (and only) LFD Limitado II that I had. I was actually working at my B&M and I turned SOOOOO green from that lol. Since then I have always kept a cola on hand lol.

I remember when I first started smoking I smoked some some stronger smokes. I walked into a B&M to have a smoke, and being new I didn't know much besides that I read Padron. So he picked out a PAM Imperial, I smoked about 30 minutes into that I thought I was going to throw up. I felt so guilty leaving a 18 dollar stick just sitting there, the about a month later I walked into another B&M to try the 80th Padron. I did a little better on this stick, but had to stop about 3/4 of the way through. I remember walking out of there thinking I was hammered drunk.

I had a similiar experience with a Perdomo Chapmagne 10th. RobertHogan from CP and I were at a local spot, and starving. I woofed down the end of the smoke, walked across the street to eat, and felt like I was going to puke my fuggin guts out. I've never felt like I was going to puke with a Padron, but a little light headed
