Hi anyone its my first post so be kind ...will get round to introducing myself very soon.... Need some help first...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=130266675718

Won this recently and collected it today

The seller told me it was a bit smelly due to mould as it had been sitting in his garage for a while so I took a chance on it ........anyway its not that bad but anybody got any advice on how to get rid of the smell?

Giulio

You need to provide more info since your link doesn't work and you are not clear.

I was just wondering what would be the safest way of getting rid of the smell of the mould without doing any damage to the humidor? Sorry about the link I checked it and it works now I hope.

Crap in it and leave it sealed for a few weeks. Should be set.

Your welcome... You owe me OPUS X...

what he meant was that Grape White Owl's and ACID's will remove that stinky smell you are witnessing ...

What does the inside of the humi smell like? Musty? Moldy? Any stains or markings? Where is the smell strong or weak, e.g, do the shelves smell the same as walls?

You need to air it out and get a box of baking soda and open the box and put it in there. That will absorb some of the smell.

Welcome to CP and start reading the threads on humidors.

PS: Don't crap in your humidor, it'll just smell like shite!

Mostly musty with a few light stains at the bottom.

Where the smells are help determine how much action is needed. The box could just need an airing out in a low RH environment; it could need baking soda to absorb the smell; or it could need activated charcoal. The wood could need a wipe down with a weak alcohol and/or weak bleach solution to kill (as much as possible) the colonies of mold; or the interior could need a light sanding (wear a mask when sanding, as spanish cedar dust is very unhealthy).

In an unrelated topic, I can't tell from the pics - how well does that door seal, and what did you get for humidifiers with such a beast?

Another thing that might work is some petrol and a book of matches... :whistling:

Or you might just want to get it out of a humid environment first of all, then try wiping down the insides and then inspect to see if there is visible mold that has worked it's way into the wood or if it's all just on the surface. Another option might be to try and lightly sand the cedar with some very fine sandpaper which might just remove some of the offending odor.

I don't think I would risk putting cigars into a once moldy humidor. If I did, I would probably take care to wipe it down with alcohol and then cover up the smell with baking soda and distilled water. This may take some work...

You're welcome, I hope it helped :)

He had a great comeback to your first post, but he had a change of heart. I thought it was one of the better comebacks in a while. I should have quoted it!

To be honest I was thinking that as a newbie I did not want to offend anyone so edited it out :p

That's the best part of being a newbie.. Start off on the right foot and let everyone know your personality.

And now you learn something..

Enjoy your stay at CP..
