Wednesday afternoon Erik Nording dropped by the shop unexpectedly while I was at the office working the 'real job' (so I didn't get to meet him). Apparently, Erik was in town for an event he was doing locally on Thursday and decided to personally deliver a shipment of his pipes. I just happened to call the shop to discuss something with Jim just after Erik came in. Though I've not smoked a pipe in about 20 years, I jokingly asked Jim to ask Erik to suggest a pipe for me, I said I prefer an Oom Paul. I heard Erik say there was no Oom Paul in this shipment. I quickly discussed my business and hung up.

Thursday evening I was working at the shop when Gary (one of our regulars) dropped in after attending Erik's event. Gary and Jim then handed me a green velvet bag. Erick actually carved a pipe for me at the event and arranged for Gary to bring it to me. It's a beautiful virgin finish freehand that he signed "To Mike from Erik Nording Sept 2007". Needless to say, Im a pipe smoker again, I've already tried several blends from the shop, these blends are from Altadis, Dan, and Esoterica.

Blue Note- Tasty but hot, lots of tongue bite
Da Vinci- Excellent
Devils Holiday- Nice but too sweet for me, not a big fan of berries
Stonehaven- I really liked it but the wife said it made me smell like a barnyard
Tillbury- Very mild, almost like cigarette tobacco
Galway- Hot, lots of tongue bite

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the briar, it's good to be back!

Now that is a cool story! Welcome back, the pipes do treat us well ;)

Great story! I had actually gotten an email from that particular store, or stores, about him coming for an event. I had never heard of him... but then again, I have never smoked a pipe. After hearing this story though and about how much of a stand up guy he is, I might have to give it a go...

Wow! That is a treasure for sure.

My next pipe will be a Nording. I really love what he does and I hear that they're GREAT smokers.

What a story!

:)
