After putting my foot in my mouth I decided to attempt to educate myself. I googled English cigar taxes or something like that (it took a few different attempts) and found a forum where a member had posted the taxes that are added to cigars. He also indicated that, believe it or not, he was accurate. I emailed my friend Derek in Nottinghamshire (UK) asking him if this seemed right to him and though he wasn't familiar with tobacco taxes he thought it was probably reasonable. Here is a quote from his reply.

"Like all imported products (including those from SpeasTech) there is 'import duty' charged. This is just another name for tax. And then they charge a tax on the product cost plus charge tax on the duty!! So you actually pay tax on the tax......." I won't go into what he said about the PM.

This is what the poster, who I believe lives in London, said about English tobacco taxation (paraphrased)...

£140.10 per kilogram + 20% import + 17.5% VAT. So if that’s correct a £100 box of cigars (wholesale) would cost the shop roughly... 140.10/2 = £70.05, £70.05+£20+£17.5 + £100=£207.55 by the time the government added taxes. As a retail price they would probably double that. I guess that would look like 25% taxes to the end customer. Based on Derek's explanation I may not have calculated the tax quite right since I didn't calculate tax on tax anywhere.
