I started working at my local B&M yesterday. As an employee the discount is pretty significant. How should I deal with this in trades?
I would never sell at a profit but is trade value what I paid or market value? For instance my recent blind 5er trade with an eight $ avg. per stick
8 $ sticks would cost me 4$ should I then trade 16$ stick that would cost me 8$? Just wanted to know before it caused any problems

I'm definitely by no means an FOG, but I believe the general rule of thumb around here is you trade/sell for what you paid.

If you're selling them, what you paid is the rule of thumb.

If you're trading, then the only way things get on equal ground is to trade at or near MSRP. There is no way we can all pay the same at our local source, so MSRP tends to even things out. Trades are done at value not price. Of course, if you're working out a private trade, you may say something along the lines of " I have $X into these, trade me $X of something else".

Now what you don't want to do is trade MSRP for MSRP and then sell the sticks you traded for at full MSRP.

This is along the lines of what I thought.I dont think Ill ever sell smokes (yeah I know never say never) , so the trading part was of the most interest to me.I think msrp with a disclaimer is how Ill go forward. Thanks

Matt hits it pretty squarly on the head.

Let's say you have an opportunity to buy a super rare stick that MSRP's for $20.00, but your price is $14.00. If you were to offer them to the members, you should offer them for $14.00 (plus shipping, of course).

However, in a trade, MSRP for MSRP is the only good way there is to be fair about things. The converse of your situation is the Anejo's purchased at Casa Fuente for $30.00 arn't worth $30.00 in a trade when MSRP is more like $10.00. Since you could have an advantage in a trade situation, as Matt pointed out, selling those traded sticks to make a profit would be frowned on.

I think it's as simple as "don't screw a brother" and "don't set out to make a profit". Follow that spirit, be honest, and all should be well....

Thanks for asking - a good question, to be sure.

I agree with Tom on this one for sure. I know we have other shop employees here and I know how some of them feel, but I would love to hear any weigh in here just for good measure since they have experience with this already.
