The other day at work I was on lunch and McDonalds was working super fast, I got in, out, and done in minutes. I realized I had 45 minutes left of my break, was enjoying a cool day relaxing in my car with The Wall playing, and decided that was the perfect opportunity to get a short smoke in. I had picked up a few different small cigars, looking for a good short winter smoke, so I can finish before I freeze my nuts off this January. I looked in my glove box, and pulled out an Arturo Fuente Exquisito, maduro.
I looked at it, and noted; this was an ugly cigar. Wrap was rough, the end was just wrapped off (looked like an un-cut penis actually), and the cap was...i dunno if there even was a cap. Smelled good though, so I clipped it. Got a good, even cut, despite the short filler (are these short filler?), and lit it with a match. I noticed that, unlike other short-filler 'gars i've smoked, this one did not leave bits of tobbacco in my mouth on every puff.
Taste throughout was very consistent. The first things I tasted was a sweet flavor I liked quite a lot, almost like a vanilla. Undertones of spice the whole way. I hesitate to say vanilla ice-cream, solely because of the cuban imigaes this invokes, but I feel that it was very close in taste to that: vanilla, cool, and creamy. It was really delicious, and I liked this much more than many of the 'full flavored' $4-$6 robustos and churchills I have tried. The draw was a litte more stiff than I like, but the flavor and smoothness of the smoke made up for it. Ash was white with black bands, and not strong. This burned at the perfect temperature, did not get hot like many small cigars, dunno if the tight draw actually helped that or not. Towards the end the taste sensations strengthened, pleasantly, for a few minutes before dying out completely in the last 1/2 inch. It was just barely getting too hot at this point too. I enjoyed this 'gar from tip to damn near nub, which is alot more smoking enjoyment than I get from many premiums, which don't "kick-in" until the 2nd third and then grow bitter at the end.
Overall, I was very pleased with this small cigar, and will probably buy more. I dunno if I need a whole box though, so may be looking for a box split in the future. Compared to the rest of the AF 'budget line' I found this a superior experience to either the Cubanitos (too harsh) and the Curly Heads.
