I was in the B$M today buying a few tins, when the store owner mentioned that we have the same tastes in tobacco. Oh really? I guess I don't smoke as many latakia blends as I used to, I responded. "Not surprising", he responded," you're getting to be about that age. Many smokers give up on the stuff as they get older." I've never heared this before. It's true, though, I don't smoke any English or Balkan blends other than Penzance, and that's only about once a week and I'll tell ya, I've smoked more than my share of #759 back in the day. Any one else heard of this? It's a first for me.

Doc.

Huh, that's interesting. I've never heard that before, but I think I have a few years before I find out if it's personally true.

I know my Grandfather always smoked Burley, but I don't know if that was just because that's what he had easiest access to or what.

There are a lot of gentlemen at the only other board I really visit that have reached the over 50 bracket and I know a lot of them enjoy Virginias above all.

Interesting, indeed...

It makes sense that if many blends have this strong element like latakia it would get monotonous after a while. I've only been smoking, this time around, for a few months and I'm ALREADY tiring of it. I've recently started exploring the Syrian versions but these options are limited and it's still latakia, albeit less cloying. The 8YO Murray's Dunhill SMM I got on eBay employs syrian latakia to good effect, for instance. Part of that may be age, though. But the cyprian is overpowering in most blends.

I did enjoy the Cairo that you suggested. It's a great example of what an English blend can be like without the latakia. The other aspects come to the fore.
