With work keeping me on the road lately, today was the first day of many (10 to be exact) where I was able to avoid airports and hotels and just enjoy sleeping in my own bed and smoking a nice cigar. I plan to enjoy it as I will be back on the road late next week, but that’s far enough away that I won’t think about that just yet.
So tonight I got home and decided that after the kids and the wife went to bed I would finish the second half of the football game with a cigar and a glass of something nice. The drink, well that was easy and I went with a glass of Jefferson's Reserve. The cigar, well that was the hard part. I opened the humi and looked over the “top shelf”. A lot of tasty options there but I decided that tonight was the night to review one of my favorite daily smokes and in all honesty, one of my top 10 favorite smokes period. I grabbed a tissue wrapped ERDM Robusto Larga and smiled as I headed to the smoking chair. As I posted recently, this is my first Colorado winter as a cigar smoker and as of late the nights have been cold and windy forcing me to find a nice new place to relax with a cigar. The solution: a quick overhaul of the garage, add a TV, a poker table and a nice chair and problem solved.
Now to the cigar! This is my second box of this vitola but I have held off on a review until I could really get to know this cigar and test its consistency. Well tonight was no different then the first 20 or so that I have enjoyed.
The appearance is a very dark Oscuro wrapper. I tend to migrate towards darker wrappers and this cigar has had a lot to do with that. There were one or two noticeable veins but a very good looking vitola overall. I snipped the cap with my Palio and found a nice even draw with a smooth prelit tobacco taste. I always look forward to the sweet tobacco scent of these cigars which reminds me of a habano. This cigar is fairly firm to the pinch and very well constructed. I put the torch to the foot and then lit her up and got ready to get down to business.
The first third offered a nice rich tobacco taste and lots of thick smoke. I don’t have nearly the discriminating palette that some on this site do, but I could detect light flavors of leather and a subtle sweetness. The burn so far is near perfect and the ash was a nice dark grey which fell after about 1.5 inches.
The 2/3 began to show a bit more body and complex flavors. She was still producing a ton of thick smoke but now I start to taste the slight hints of the chocolate that I have come to know these by. Overall at this point the taste settles into a nice full smooth flavor.
The last third started to show a bit more body and hints of spice. I almost detect cinnamon here, but again I don’t trust my palette’s experience enough to put that label on it. Still I would have to describe the overall taste at this point as a smooth rich flavor with a touch of chocolate and woody leather.
Verdict: Overall I am hard pressed to find anything bad to say about this cigar, although I tried. The flavor really stands out, the burn is usually near perfect requiring no touch ups, and in my experience these don’t require much down time and are ready to smoke after a short rest in the humi. So far I prefer medium-full bodied cigars and this is definitely that, but with a great never harsh full flavor from start to finish. **Padron worshippers stop reading here . Now I am a pardon whore like most of you, my favorite cigar being the PAM Exclusivo and up until recently my everyday go to smoke was also a Padron, the 2000 and 3000. I have to admit that this ERDM has recently dethroned Padron and taken over the top spot as my everyday cigar. I know that’s blasphemy in these parts, but in my somewhat short time as a smoker this is one of only a handful of cigars that I am always looking forward to and know will never let me down.
This is a real winner in my book and at $3 a stick it's a great value. I burn my fingers on these every time.
Cheers!
