Ok...onto this review. I first want to send a thanks to a very generous BOTL and he knows who he is. I was given a extremely old cigar to smoke. Now what I was told about the flavor profile was way different than what I experienced and without a doubt a fantastic smoke. Again, thanks for this great smoke to try. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me for this review. But fortunately, a camera was present so another member on the board by the name of SMSUCigarguy aka Brian did have a wonderful camera present for this historical event that took place. I will have to wait for him to give me the pictures so I can then edit this post later. The pictures will be worth the wait, but I have to review this cigar so I can do it while its still fresh in my mind.

Without further ado, the review of the El Rey Del Mundo Perfecciandos from the 1930's.

Inspecting the cellophane which was extremely dark and looking at the cigar, it was flawless. Before I even clipped this cigar, I sniffed the cigar to see what I could pick up on. My first initial impression was that of Spanish cedar and there was something else that I picked up, but I couldn't figure it out what it was. So I didn't ponder on it to long as I do not have any experience with a cigar that is aged like this one.

I proceeded to clip the cigar at 8:56pm and took a predraw off it so I could get some feel for this cigar before I lit it. I was a little worried at first as the draw was a little tight, but once it was set on fire the tightness was gone instantly. After setting flame to it which didn't take much at all, my first initial puffs had a woody taste to it. In fact, it reminded me of a campfire. Then a transition took place at 9:01pm and that was a Earthy/musty taste to it. When I say this, I don't mean like a bad thing either. It really worked for this cigar from my perspective. This was when the cigar finally started to open up on me as it was well past the tip of the cigar that is on this one.

It started to smell like Spanish cedar being burned. Just so its clear I have a habit of taking the cedar wraps around my Opus and torching them in the ashtray as I find the smell is pleasant. That is what this cigar reminded me of that and maybe others can relate too. I really enjoyed this aspect of the cigar.

There was plenty of smoke off each puff that I do. I was really amazed at the fact that this little cigar could produce this much smoke. It had a pretty dark color to it. It reminded me of the dust found after sweeping up cigar ash that has been dropped on my kitchen floor. Not a single white cloud at all. It was a surprising fact to witness.

I had thought about how I would write this review at this little snap shot in time and relate it to others that haven't had the opportunity to smoke something like this. I have found that its hard to describe what was going on in this cigar at many levels and hoped I could make everyone feel like that actually had smoked this same cigar after reading this review.

A nice mellow woody after taste has been apparent throughout this cigar so far and I took note of this at 9:08pm. I did let a few others try this cigar for a puff or two as I wanted to share this with all my friends around me. So they can get a feel for what I was doing at this point and also get a little different insight about this cigar. As other cigar smokers pick up on different qualities in a cigar. I discussed this impression of 9:08pm with OpusXKC aka Tony and we concluded that a Semi-sweet Cantaloupe taste came out at this time frame. It was very subtle and pleasant. Hard to explain whats going on with this cigar still. Something seemed lurking underneath which I couldn't put a finger on.

At 9:12pm I got the impression of a coffee taste. I was surrounded by my many friends in the KC area like OpusXKC, Brian, Shawn, Brad, Scott, and a few others. After smoking this cigar to this point, I got pretty thirsty at this point but I didn't drink anything till I was done. But I did feel like I just finished a nice steak dinner with a baked potato meaning very filling.

First ash took place at 9:15pm. A tar taste started to come out since 9:15pm. Its not over whelming or distracting so I haven't worried about it yet. I have smoked this cigar very slowly so I can enjoy this cigar to the fullest which is so fascinating to me. Definitely would work with a nice cup of coffee. Example would be a nice Cafe Mocha which will allow other characteristics to shine forth. The cigar did pick up in strength...No touch ups required so far. Its still very woody still at 9:23pm.

I just exhaled out my nose at 9:24pm and had a white peppery smell to it and taste. Mild but so yummy. Then a odd taste came out just now with a minty taste off the smoke in which I inhaled and this was at 9:37pm. Then at 9:40pm I decided it was time to ash this bad boy once again and hope other flavors come out. The thirty factor really started to kick in about this time after I ashed the cigar. Again, I am waiting for this cigar to be done so I can enjoy a drink. No reason to have conflicting tastes come out of my drink and linger with the cigar.

The cigar has been so consistent throughout with the burn and taste. Its really amazing that a cigar with this much age on it can still be so damn good. I haven't had to do a touch up whatsoever as this beautiful little gem has managed to go well beyond my expectations. At 9:42pm I let the cigar smoke linger in the mouth and the tongue actually started to tingle and even the lips was tingling.

Earthy notes once again came out at 9:48pm. Some what spicy characteristics once again which has made this a nice appearance to please the taste buds. Better description would be a earthy/musky notes like you would find from a pile of old leaves decomposing and was racked around a little. That's the kind of taste that would come to mind if I was around that. I absolutely mean that in a good way and not a bad experience. So far it was very pleasing to me. Again the smoke was getting really dark at this point. The draw is flawless still after all this time of smoking this cigar. I took note of this at 9:50pm and then at 9:52pm, it was ash time for this cigar. By 10:05pm, a lot of tar has come out. So, when you see the picture of the nub, it will show how goo I think this cigar was.

So in after thought. I'm honored that I got to smoke a cigar that I call a rare gem from time long past. I'd have to give it a 100 out of 100 for points. I just really enjoyed the cigar and even with the tar aspect that came out. I didn't find that it distracted me whatsoever nor hurt the cigar. Still something happened with this smoke that I never put my finger on but it didn't hurt the cigar at all. In hind sight, I wished I had a nice cup of coffee to go with this cigar.

Again....damn fine smoked and thanks once again.

That was fun to read, I really look forward to the pictures, so I can put a "face" to that cigar. As I was reading your description of the initial inspection, as I do with atucks reviews, I thought to myself, I think my hands might actually be shaking by the time I put fire to something of that age. glad you got to try one, and kudos to your benefactor.

Wow! :0 Quite a review! Nice job of describing the flavors. I liked the reference to the raked leaves. I have noticed a sense like that on some pre-embargos that I have smoked. What was the size of this cigar. From what I understood, they were very small. But I see that it took like an hour to smoke. I might have to share some of my vintage smokes if I know that they will get reviews like this. You should have atleast got a drink of water though, no need to be distracted by something like thirst. I hope you can get another one so you can try it with a coffee.

It wasn't big. If you have ever seen a Partagas Demitip, its the same size in length but not very thick. I'd guess like a 44 RG.

What he failed to mention is that there was another one burning in the room as well, mine! I didn't get the same impression of this cigar as Loren. The cigar had taken on so much of it surroundings that I presume it had been keep in that there was very little of the actual cigar left. I got a lot of very woody flavors out of mine with a very tart note. It was almost like the first time you make the mistake of putting fresh, green bark in your mouth. It did have coffee notes but so subtle that I would have lost it with any kind of beverage. I'm glad I was given such an awesome gift from such a good friend. Very unique treat for the end of a very long day!

I have the pictures and I plan to link them into the thread tonight. There is some really nice shots. :D

Again...thanks to the very generous BOTL for allowing me to enjoy this cigar.

Nice review as usual Loren, thanks!.

I always wander about cigars with so much age. As Moki pointed out to me recently when discussing aged cigars, if the stick is left in conditions that are not ideal for just 3 weeks,
the cigar will never be the same. This is such an old stick, the history that it has will determine what you are tasting and/or what you should
be tasting.

Those are crazy nubs Loren & Brad! It looks like you guys didn't enjoy those at all.

Very nice review Loren! I've never had a pre-embargo cuban...I might have to try to find some now!

No, what I will say is you cheated! I did my nub by hand and you had to use a tool!

Nah...That was the very very very end when I could not hold it any longer and using the tool didn't work for me as I couldn't puff on the cigar so I tossed it and burnt my fingers instead. :D

Nice review Loren. I liked your roach clip. :whistling:
