Cigar: El Rey del Mundo Grandes de Espana (2000)
Size: 7 ½ X 38
Vitola: Delicados
This cigar was gifted to me from a fine BOTL about a year ago. They came unbanded in a fresh box that he bought in 2000 and have been resting nicely in his Brooklyn basement since. This evening I told him that I was going to light this baby up and he assured me that its complexity was going to blow me away. I hope to hell he’s right...
Appearance and Pre-light draw – As you can see from the photo, the filler on this cigar appears to be bunched a little rough. The wrapper has a wonderfully silky, milk chocolate appearance to it. Now the first thing that surprised me about this smoke was the pre-light spice on the lips. WOW! I can’t believe how much spice this cigar is giving me just by mere contact. The draw feels a little tight, which I was kind of expecting based on the reviews of this cigar. None the less, I’m getting a draw and a cedary pre-light taste. Nuff of all that... I’m ready to light this thing up...
1st third – Right off the bat this cigar has distinct flavors. Cedar and leather seem to be dominant. Also, I’m getting that “floral” quality that I detect at times. Aw hell... I’m having a hard time putting my hand on the flavors, but they are delicate and complex. The draw is just fine! Okay, so I’m also getting the Suckling Signature... tea, honey and a hint of mocha! The smoke is nice and I’m able to exhale most of it out my nostrils. Nothing harsh about this baby. Just the tail end of some spice in the nose. I’m ready to bust out my accompanying drink... Vernors, The Original Ginger Soda and a fine pairing indeed.
2nd third – I’m really enjoying this cigar. A couple of things that I’m not crazy about. I don’t really care for this ring gauge. Lanceros and the likes really don’t do it for me. I prefer something a bit thicker, more like a corona. Also, this cigar seems to be a bit soft, which is probably in part my fault. Finally, I’m having some issues with the draw now. Could be the humidity here in N. Texas this evening. But there is no denying it... this cigar tastes great. Still getting lots of cedar and creamy smoke.
Final 3rd and conclusion – The draw has picked up again. I can’t believe how creamy the flavor has gotten! :whistling: I would say this cigar is definitely showing its age. Subtle yet complex flavors are dominating my palate. This is why I enjoy smoking cigars! There has been some finishing spice that really picked up here at the end. I’ve had to touch it with the torch a few times, as the humidity has really messed with the burn. The flavors have stayed consistently rich through out the life of this smoke. It’s been rated as a “light” smoke. I will agree with that. I would also say that it has a unique character, as it tastes really like nothing else I have smoked before. It’s elegant and refined. I picture a sophisticated English man smoking this cigar on his bi-annual trip to the island. Lucky bastid! Probably brings a box or two home to enjoy on those damp English evenings. Er maybe Cuban Diplomats after a political dinner... Okay... enough of all that... (a sh!tty attempt at being poetic)
I have really enjoyed this smoke tonight. This is one of the smokes that I have been reluctant to grab. Now that its gone, I will miss it, but never forget it. I have read that these have been discontinued. I would imagine there are a few out there to be had though. Grab one if you can...
