This one was placed in one of my passes by a very generous BOTL. I have been saving this one for a special occasion. And being that is Fathers Day, this was the prefect day to smoke a special cigar! A little background information on the cigar. The Dunhill Atado is Panatelas Largas parejo with the measurements of 6 7/8ths x 28. They came packaged in 25's in a SLB.
This morning I had to run to Circle K to grab a cup of coffee. Normally I only brew coffee at work. Thursday when I left work, I left all my coffee and beans at the ship.
So when I returned home, I drank my Death by Chocolate coffee while talking to my wife before she had to go to work. I got the kids started on their chores, and sat in front of my open fridgedor trying to figure out what I wanted to smoke. I reached for my varnished box that I keep the majority of my Habanos in. As soon as I opened the light bulb went off in my head.
I grabbed the Atados, poured myself a glass of spring water, and headed out to the back porch.
My wife has done a wonderful job making the back porch a relaxing escape here at home. It is entirely screened in, and has a cut out in the roof that is screened also. The cut out is directly over a garden area 4 feet x 12 feet with a small cove that is a foot deeper. She put in plants, and neat little pot holders, a couple little streamlets, with running water. Some climbing ferns in the rafters along with candle holders. On our patio table she has a nice little orchid. This is my smoking sanctuary.
I sat down outside as it wasn't too hot or humid out yet. I clipped the end and took a draw. Nice cedar flavor with the dry tobacco taste that comes with a nicely aged cigar.
I toasted the foot, and leaned back to realx the morning away. With a cigar of such small ring gauge, you really have to smoke slowly as to not overheat the cherry. I was in no hurry anyways. I was presented with a cedary flavor with a nice floral(citrus rind) and hay undertone. I puffed away, listening to the birds singing over the sounds of running water. Blowing smoke rings was easy because of the abundance of smoke this thin cigar produced. As I sat, listening to the faint sounds of laughter that I could hear from my kids playing inside, I pondered the meaning of fatherhood.
Melody, our adopted cat, came outside, gave me and Jack(our young golden retriever) a look of disdain. This is her sanctuary too. She walked passed us, and jumped up on the sill to watch the birds out in the yard. Looking down at Jack by my feet, I realized of wondful the cigar started to taste. The woodsy flavors seemed to dance with grassy hay flavors. One puff, the cedar would be pronounced, and the next puff the grassy hay flavor would promenade ahead with renewed vigour. Now I understand what MRN meant by "the finnese of a vintage cigar". This went on for another 30 minutes. Pure smoking bliss.
At this point I was truely lost in the cigar, my own thoughts, and the orchestra of running water, childrens laughter, and singing birds. When I finally came to, I had about 1/4 of the cigar left. I think waht finally brought me back to reality, was the bittersweet nutty flavor that I noticed. This was added to the already dancing flavors of cedar and hay. WOW
Eventually, the cedar and hay flavors had decided they had enough, and exited stage right. The cigar was winding down to the last 1/4 when I was hit in the head wth a peppery taste.
Now it was the bittersweet nut and peppers flavor turn. The flavors seemed to be in a race against each other. The cigar would get really nutty, then all of a sudden the pepper would take over. Then the bittersweet flavor would rush ahead. It was akin to watch two sprinters running the 1/4 mile. Finally, with a nub left, I could smell a little amonia in the smoke, and let it go out peacfully.
What a great cigar! And what a great start to a day of goofing off around the house. I was a little surprised at the end when the cigar took a "youthful" turn. From the looks of it, this cigar had plenty of room left for additional aging. This is definately not a cigar for one who is new to Habana's, as it would be easy to over smoke this cigar and loose the many nuances it has to offer.
Happy Fathers Day!
