We had a snow/ice storm yesterday which made for an aweful drive home last night so I decided that there was no need to challenge the roads and conditions and stayed home this morning. Not having had a cigar in about a week, I took full advantage of working from home today and decided to smoke a couple of sticks that I have been wanting to try for a while.
First off is a Cuesta-Rey Stanford's Cameroon Reserve Pyramid #9, special thanks to Smellysell. This is a great looking stick with an oily toothy wrapper and after reading Mark Twains review of the churchill, I was really looking forward to it. Prelight smell was earthy and a little sweet. The draw had just enough resistance and the burn nice and even needing no attention. The flavor was quite complex and although I was working while smoking it, it really impressed me. The second best part of this cigar was the sheer amount of smoke it produced. Its Padron type smoke and fills the air with even the lightest puff. The overall taste was a little on the mild side but full of character. I will definitely get my hands on more of these.

Next on the list was a VSG Enchantment. Being a big fan of both VSG's and this vitola, I naturally gravitate to this cigar. Initial smell hinted of all good things VSG; big tobacco and a slightly sweet taste to the cap. Prelight draw was a bit firm as I expected but it opened up nicely once lit. The burn started to go bad right off the bat and although I was able to touch it up, the cigar had issues staying lit so I relit after the first ash. I fear this may have affected the taste or I at least hope it did because I really did not care for this cigar. The taste was a bit tarry and stale and did nothing for me. It did start to come around in the very last inch but too little too late. I have had one previous to this and I remember enjoying it so take this for what it's worth.
Overall the star today was the Cuesta-Rey. For less then half the price of the Enchantment it was better in every way from appearance to taste. I will continue to smoke my VSG's although not the Enchantment. If you like the figurados, stick with a Work of Art.
