bieng in the retail industry, you never EVER pay msrp for anything. The standard rule of thub in a pass is your cigar is worth MSRP, no matter what you pay for it. For Example, that 10 year old Dunhill I got for 10 dollars might msrp for 50 cents, therefore ina trade it is worth 50 cents. It is fairly easy to get cigars for retail (At my store msrp is always about 10-20% hihger of what we charge)online.

Example

A.F.H. short story
14.00 on the strip
8.00 local cigar shop
5-6.00 msrp...

the moral of the story goes...buy your cigars online you want to trade or pass...the ones you smoke can be bought at your local outlet

I do believe MSRP is 4.75 on that short story. There are stores that sell MSRP. The tinderbox sold everything at MSRP. Find a store, shop there alot, get on there good side, and they'll throw in freebies and sometimes discounts...

Humidor #1 marked "Smoke"

Humidor #2 marked "Trade/Pass"

Then the tinderbox here (where I do most of my shopping) are no where near msrp...however last time I was in..I did find a rocky patel toro in my bag somehow

I think rarity of a cigar can come into play as well. Which can help make up for a lower msrp than it's actually worth. Perhaps not with something that is readily available in stores, like a hemi, but for something that's older or out of production, rarity should give the value a jump.

I've been treated well at the Tinderbox in Memphis. They call me when hard to find cigars come in. Had a few feebies wind up in the bag.

The owner (Jim and Lynn) from Memphis also own the one in Chattanooga. Ken, tell them you know John from the Chattanogga store. I doubt you'll get a discount (considering I never did) but maybe they'll be ever nicer! lol

And if they ever get in opus, let me know. Jim hogs them... :(

Casa Fuente singles start at 18.00..they are available no where else..so msrp is 18.00....considering how rare these are..what would be an appropraite value??...25.00????

Eh, I figure I'll be spending 2-3 over msrp at shops.
Anymore and I have to think hard about it

The TinderBox at the Wolfchase Galleria (my local tobacconist) treats me well despite my young age and lack of experience. I am in there atleast 3 times a week and chatted it up for a while with one of the owners about my Mini Fridgador.

They typically are closer to MSRP than any other tobacco store in Memphis. For example, MSRP for a Padron 2000 Maduro is about $3.15-$3.25. At the TinderBox it is $3.60, at the Cigar Depot it is $4.10, and at a self-owned small tobacco store on Summer Ave., they are $4.25. My CAO Italia Gondola was $7.05 at the TinderBox and they sell for $7.25 at Cigar Depot.

Yet to get any free gars from TinderBox unless you count the extra AF Breva they threw into my bag the other day.

You are not kidding about the OpusX at TinderBox. The guy in there has been "sold out" for more than 2 weeks now, yet I know of 3 different cigar shops in Memphis that still have Fuente's, Perfexion X's, and Robusto's in stock.

You gotta ask if they have em in. They keep em hidded in a cabinet behind a cigar rack. :p

That's the first thing I said when I went in there. I was on an OpusX mission, since it'll be the cigar I smoke on my initiation night, and asked Lynn and she said they have been sold out for a week.

I came back the next day and their daughter was running the shop and she went into the closet inside their humidor and double checked for me. They didn't have any in there, so I gave up and paid the extra $2 at the Cigar Depot.

Hehe, we hide them... :whistling:
But then again, Jim and Lynn give us there leftovers.... so yeah we have a reason to hide them.

I'm honestly a little ticked because of the fact that he gets all the opus and sends us his left overs.... :angry2:

The sad part is they'll never out do the other local shop.

Unless I'm remembering things wrong, I believe the $18 includes tax ($18 is for the Corona Gordas, the other sizes are more). Also if you buy a few boxes from the store, you can sometimes get a bit of a discount (no set policies tho).

Great smokes.

MSRP means Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price.

Note the italicized word. Retailers are under no obligation to sell things at MSRP. As with all other commodities, they often take into account the "rarity" and DEMAND for a particular cigar. These two factors weigh heavily in what any retailer charges for an item. Simple supply and demand.

Examples:

OpusX are in HIGH demand and not in stock that often. This translates to prices generally above MSRP.

Cigars that are not in demand and sitting on shelves for months on end are sold below MSRP.

There are exceptions to this as some retailers stick closely to MSRP no matter the demand or supply. However, I think they are the exception, not the rule.

Now, in regards to passes and trades, the going MSRP (not what you paid for them) is used. So, if you got taken for a ride and paid $35.00 for an OpusX Fuente Fuente, don't expect to get $35 in cigars in trade.
