OK, this is my first review as you all know. The Cigar is a Don Pepin Garcia Vegas Cubanas gifted by Franco593. There were a handful other DPG's sent along with it but I chose this one because he did the review on the Cuban Classic (along with a bit of fairy tale humor).
Setting:
My smoking lounge in the front room of the house. Dogs hanging out with me and my KEF's pounding out some great Jazz.
Drink:
Sam Adams Choco Bock
Size: 5X50 Invictos
Pre light:
Nice medium color Corojo wrapper, no major veins or blemishes, smells of a light spice wood, good earthy smell.
After cut at the cap smell became more present, very earthy spicy/pepper smell. Pre-light draw was very even and smooth, not at all tight.
First 1/3rd
I toasted the stick with my trusty Colibri triple flame and at first draw all i can say is Wow, this is going to be a nice smoke, I think it helps that it's the first in a couple of weeks. First impression is the spice i smelled wasn't there but more of an herbal, peppery taste that lingered on the tongue. but after a few draws it came right back. So far a very pleasant smoke. The ash after the first 1-1 1/2 was a medium grey and a bit flaky but i didn't fall off unless I made it fall into the ashtray. i was impressed that I didn't have to touch it up at all since first lit.
Half way mark:
Some slight burn issues started but after a few pulls it corrected itself. The pepper taste stayed and it became a little sweet with a hint of leather and I swear a hint of cedar also. This far in it stayed very smooth and also got a bit creamy (although it might have been from the SA). It leaves a nice herbal note on the tonger this far in.
Final 1/3rd
Flavors stayed pretty consistent through the entire smoke, it never got too hot or harsh (until I nibbed it). I feel it got a bit more creamy toward the end. The ash got a little darker and tightened up after that half way mark.
Final thoughts:
This was a great smoke, one of the best I have had in a long time, this is one I would definitely buy again and again. i think it's going to make it into my regular rotation of good smokes. It was a nice medium smoke that i feel paired up nicely with the Choco Bock.
And on a side note, I wore my slippers just for you Franco plus my smoking buddy liked the smell.
Again thanks for the smokes Franco, I'm going to have to hit the others tonight and tomorrow while we are getting snowed in according to the news.
Sam
