Don Pepin Garcia My Father No. 4
Size: 7 1/2" x 38 rg Lancero
Wrapper: Nicaraguan
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Strength: Full
Normally when I am gifted a cigar, I try to remember or mark down who I received it from, however this time it is escaping me. I apologize to whomever sent me this cigar or who I bought it from, or however I procured it, for not remembering, but thank you! As some of you know, I am a self proclaimed lancero nut, and I am always up for trying out a new line or brand in a lancero format, so I of course was very eager to try out a lancero from one of my favorite manufacturers: Don "Pepin" Garcia. I actually am not too big a fan of the original My Father line of cigars (though the 1922, while a different cigar really, is damn near perfection), but I am a firm believer of trying something before you knock it. Needless to say, I felt that while I may not be a fan of the other vitolas, perhaps the lancero would prove different. A good example of this would be the DPG Blue Label line, in that I don't care for the other sizes, but the lancero was outstanding.
Pre-Light
In terms of construction, the Garcia's certainly can give most any other manufacturer a run for their money. I love that Pepin can execute the pigtail cap along with the triple seam with a skill that rivals the Cuban Trinidad line. I can easily say that this is a prime example of a superbly rolled lancero, and that is a huge compliment considering the difficulty of rolling this size. The squeeze test revealed a somewhat hard feeling across the length, but I was not too worried about the draw. The scent on the wrapper was a very sweet, almost cinnamon like smell that I am a huge fan of.
Draw & Burn
Using the punch on my Zikar lighter, I removed the pigtail cap to find a draw that was a bit on the tight side, but not to the point where it was plugged. I actually prefer a tighter draw on lanceros as it forces me to sip them, which keeps the smaller size from causing bitterness that I tend to find as I am a bit of a fast smoker. The ash was a light gray with very dark banding in it, and was a bit on the flaky side, dropping small slivers from time to time in my lap.
Flavor Profile
While the cold draw was a bit uneventful, once the foot was glowing nicely the true power of this cigar came through both in taste and strength. The initial Pepin pepper blast was there, and quickly subsided a quarter inch in to reveal a raw tobacco taste that burned the nose when exhaled. There is a slight sweetness on the lips, and the smoke coming through carried on it a very nice nuttiness. There wasn't much change throughout the duration of the cigar, with the flavors being comprised of tobacco, nuts and perhaps a bit of leather.
Overall Impression
Despite the simplicity of this cigar, I still would venture to say that it was very enjoyable. There are cigars that are able to pull off simplicity in such a way that makes it a joy to smoke, while others are simple in a bland manner. This was not the case with the My Father, and I am glad that I had the opportunity to try it.
