I picked these up in a CI sampler. I got 10 of them, 5 robustos (Duma) and 5 petite coronas (Kuro) for $19.99. I have to say when I bought them a month ago, they smelt like ass. They had an overpowering pungent sour scent to them. I got a little peeved, but i threw them in the humi anyway. I pulled a Duma out the other night, after a couple of Sam Adams Scotch Ales, and figured I would give one a try. The weird smell had gone, it ended up smoking quite nice actually. After I finished it I told myself I would do a review of one later. Here it is.
I'm smoking the Kuro tonight. It's a 4 x 45 smoke. It has an African Cameroon leaf in the filler (interesting). With a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper. The cigar itself is very nice looking. The wrapper was shimmering in the light, with very little veins. The band is absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of an Opus X band for some reason, though I have never seen one in real life. It was very nicely packed. I didn't feel any soft spots throughout.
I opened up the cap with my trusty Xikar MTX scissors. The draw was just right. It had the perfect amount of "give" to me. I tasted a lot of cedar and faint coffee. Almost like espresso. I toasted the foot with my Nibo Space double torch, and smelled coffee, and a little chocolate mixed in for good measure. I let it sit for a minute to get the burn established.
The first third was very enjoyable. I tasted a heavy dark roasted coffee flavor, with a good amount of cedar. Big volumes of smoke, and a thin, even burn line. The finish was quick, and ash strong.
The second third was just as good. The medium/full body dropped down to just a medium, while the coffee and cedar flavors remained. The dark chocolate came into play and was very nice. I had a little bit of a burn issue at this point. Probably because I was on my balcony watching a thunderstorm while I was smoking. It was quickly fixed with the torch, and I never had the problem again.
The final third was just as good, the flavors got a little more intense. The body picked up again, more on the full side. I ended up nubbing the thing.
I don't know if you guys have had the chance to try one of these yet. But I suggest if you are able to pick up one of the samplers, I would do so. Even though it's cheap ($19.99 for 10) it is definitely a gem. I will be buying more of these in the future. I still have about 6 left, but I have a feeling those will go quick.
