A friend and I smoked a pair of these a couple of nights ago. That we had just savored '01 Upmann Winnies  (very yummy!) didn't help our experience of these sticks. About a week ago this friend and I had greatly enjoyed a pair of Opus Xs. The wonderful flavors and flavor development were still in our minds as were the wonderful Winnies we had just smoked.

After lighting these we experienced a very different flavor profile from the Upmanns. Delicious, very rich and full right from the start. We remarked how rich and full it was immediately. As we smoked we both remarked how the flavor remained the same. In fact, to our taste buds the flavor remained constant all the way to the last 1/2".

Because we know Fuente can and does make some really exceptional, wonderful sticks, we had expected an really special smoke at this price level.

We agreed that, for the money, had we wanted delicious, one dimensional flavor, we would have been better off smoking many Padron x000s instead of these.

Never had one, so I can't comment on it, but god I hate when that happens.

And  to the Padrón 2000 comment.

Dave, that is completely different than my experience with the DC Aniversario. Sorry to hear you were disappointed. I would consider this one of the top 3 cigars I've had.

Different smokes for different folks I guess, but I certainly could not disagree more.

In my eyes, this is one of the few Super Premiums that is worth every penny. I don't have enough "pennies" to keep many on hand, but when I get the chance to grab one I do, and they've never let me down in any fashion.

Sorry your experience was not similar.

I had the unfortunate experience of observing one and a half hours of Tim (sinnyc) and Joe (simmsboard) go through various stages of 'orgasm face' as they smoked their Don Carlos Edicion de Aniversario 2007s at the Outlaw.

Thank God Jessica was around

That's the type of thing that can scar you for life!

Wow guys! Could the ones I got have been fakes? The bands were beautiful and identical to a 2006 I received but I am most surprised at your experience.

I still have the 06 and a couple 07s put away. I will try these again in a year or three with fresh eyes & palate and hope that they live up to your experience.

I think you should smoke a 2007 some time soon to determine if your last experience was a fluke. That way you can get more if you like it, as they are still available from many locations.

Oh, I don't think Jessica would have scarred him for life although I'm sure she would have left some marks... :whistling:

...which his wife would have seen and then SHE would have scarred him for life.

Doubtful. Maybe your palate (or even state of mind) had been affected by the H. Upmann. Maybe you got unlucky and caught a dud. Maybe you just plain didn't like it and if that's the case, consider yourself lucky as those things are as expensive as crack

Two of the local Minneapolis guys, tsmckenney and siriusstoogie, both looooove Davidoffs. I haven't found one yet that I'd ever consider smoking again (the only thing that comes to mind when I try one is that I am smoking newspaper) but they both just rave about 'em. So, I save myself some money not buying them and I generally give/trade them any Davidoffs that fall into my hands. And other than the fact that I receive pitying glances from them as they bemoan my uncultured tastes, everybody wins :) .

As Moki continues to beat into our heads - taste is subjective. If you don't like a stick that everyone raves about, it simply means you don't like that cigar. Life is too short to smoke cigars you don't like and that is doubly true for expensive ones that don't appeal to you!

I have three of these laying down and am planning on smoking one for Father's Day. Everyone has different tastes in cigars, but I generally reserve the verdict on a particular cigar until I can at least try two if not more. Every cigar can't be made perfectly, so there is always a chance of getting a stick that will yield an unpleasurable smoking experience, even from the best of them. I recently smoked my first Siglo VI and it was by far the most disappointing smoking experience I've ever had. I was actually borderline depressed by the time I was finished.... really fugged up my whole evening. The thing was plugged so bad that even approx. a dozen skewer pokes all the way through didn't help. Didn't burn right, didn't taste right.... just horrible. I'll give that one a chance to redeem itself as well this weekend.

Another thing that I experience personally in trying to smoke 2 premium cigars back to back, or any cigars for that matter back to back, is that the second is just never as good. One thing I try not to do is smoke a cigar for the first time, that I've been greatly anticipating smoking, soon after another cigar, especially another premium stick. It just never seems to go as well as I believe it should. Just imho.

Oh, and to boot the Siglo VI was my first cigar of the evening. (sorry for the partial threadjack, I needed to vent!)

I don't get this notion that a cigar needs to change flavour as it burns to be good. I've had many fantastic cigars that keep the same flavour profile as they burn.

You guys didn't split a feast of four star spicy Thai food before lighting these cigars up did you? Point being... a lot of factors can interfere with your smoking experience.

Too bad about your Sig VI experience amateuraficionado. For me, that was one of the more complex smokes I have had the pleasure of smoking...

I agree with all of these guys. Especially Mick. The look of ecstasy on Tim's and Joe's faces was certainly disturbing.

I do find that the flavors remain pretty much the same throughout on these, but those flavors are so divine that I don't mind one bit. The only thing I don't like about these is the sneakiness of the nicotine. I'll be going along smoking one of these just fine and then all of a sudden, POW towards the last quarter or so. If I go slowly it's not too bad, but sometimes it hits me pretty hard.

I'd like to thank the person that sent me my first one of these, but I'm too busy cursing him when I just have to buy more! :)

(Of course I am truly greatly appreciative to the person who sent me my first.)

I've had two of these from the '06 release.....the robusto and toro. Both were just ok.....certainly not worth the price tag imo. I too found them very one-dimensional as well as lacking consistency. They both had spots that were completely dull and then would open up a little bit....disappointing is the word I use to describe them as well.

Anyone notice a difference between the one's with the 06' bands vs. the 07?

The two we smoked were 2007s.

Now just to be clear, as I said from the outset, they were delicious, rich, full and flavorful all the way through to the nub, and we did nub them, not because they cost so much but because they tasted really good.

amateur - you are probably right, we never should have followed such divine smokes with another premium stick. I will not make that mistake again.

lordl - I guess I had expected flavor development and was disappointed there was none. I won't expect development next time.

I understand everyone's emphasis on the wonderful flavor, again, they were delicious.

Alan, you are right about the nicotine, they did pack a punch!

I will sit on the 2 '07s and the single '06 that remain in my collection and will try them again and not expect more than just wonderful taste.

Thanks to EVERYONE for all the feedback, it really helps my understanding of these sticks a great deal.

I haven't tried the '06. Jason, have you noticed a difference between the two? Come to think of it, you were supposed to let me know your thoughts on the '07!

Any difference will be purely in your mind and due maybe a little bit to storage conditions, otherwise I believe they are the exact same cigars.
