Dominican COHIBA (Yellow Bands)

Your link has an extra "http://" at the front so it doesn't work properly.

As for the deal... looks legit? I have no idea. I never liked the domestic Cohibas (Red Dot or Yellow band). But for $90 and 50 cigars, that's a pretty good deal.

Thanks for the insight Ibrief, but they are not claiming to be Cuban. They say they are Dominican.

I'm not familiar but I guess there are two COHIBA domestics. The Red Dots AND the Yellow Bands? How can two smokes have the same name?

did you even READ the link?

It is discussing the fact that any yellow dominican cohiba is absolutley BS

EDIT:
I'm saying they are BS  (but, what do I know? ;) )

CA is saying they are "Illegit"

Here, for anyone that doesn't want to "click"

Quoted from CA website:

"We're going to call this band a "hybrid counterfeit," for lack of a better term. It's intended to look like the genuine Cuban Cohiba pictured at top, but it claims Dominican origin. The only Dominican-made Cohiba that may be legally sold in the United States is the one pictured below. It's manufactured by General Cigar Holdings Inc. in a free trade zone in Santiago and exported to the United States; General registered the Cohiba name in the States in 1978. General does not sell their Cohiba or claim ownership in the Dominican Republic, where several other companies make cigars under the Cohiba name. Who owns Cohiba in the Dominican Republic is a matter for the Dominican courts.
Detecting an illegitimate Dominican Cohiba in the United States is simple. If it doesn't look like the General band below, it infringes on General's trademark. "Illegitimate" is probably a more appropriate term than "counterfeit" for the band above, in that it clearly makes no attempt to copy the look of General's band."

Ibrief,

I'm not sure what you meant or to whom you implied 'not wanting to click'. I am on my classroom computer and CA.com is firewalled. So I couldn't link to it at this time. You don't know me and I don't know you. Just a simple failure to communicate I guess.

But, I have read it in the past. I THINK there are COHIBA cigars being rolled and marketed from the Dominican Republic but General Cigar disputes their using the name because of trademark laws.

I THINK this is why CA references the difference between 'counterfeit' and 'illegitimate'. That's how I read it. But I may be wrong. The Masters Degree doesn't make me an expert, just means I wanted more pay :p

Those of you that are COHIBA gurus, please let me know if this is a good deal or not.

I'm not sure what you meant. . .
Sorry for being “snippy”. Today is not a good day.

When you dismissed my post because “the (advertised) cigars do not claim to be Cuban”, I assumed, that you were unaware that it discussed Dominicans (the subject of your thread) and not Cubans.

Therefore, I followed up with clarification of the fact that the link would lead you to information on Dominicans (which you requested) and not Cubans (which you supposed).

The next post was merely a cut and paste for the benefit of anyone unable to access the link.

All was with the best of intention, though not the best of attitude.

My apologies. :(

I've never tried one but I've heard they're pretty bad. The Red Dot's are not that great either though I do like the Pequenos.

If you guys head over to cigar afficionado and look around it explains the us supreme court rulling like 2-3 weeks ago on the trademarking of the names and who won the suit. Really interesting since now they are going to have to change names/logo. check it out www.cigarafficionado.com

I believe that both brands were being made before General Cigar bought the trademark. Once GC got the trademark, they had imports of the Yellow Band outlawed. Now, they are losing the trademark. Gawntrail, I received an 8 pack sampler for christmas by one of my co-workers that thought was a good deal for $19.99. I haven't fired one up yet(I'll hook you up ;) during the Vegas Herf). The appearance doesn't impress me. Compared to the Red Dots, they pale considerably. I'd hold off until you try one. Gregor

Ibrief,

Just a simple misunderstanding..It's all good.

To gregor22,

Thanks for the offer. I'll wait. But, it does sound awfully good, and even if they are average, they might make good give-aways on the golf course. I'll wait and see though. The COHIBA name, along with being the most recognized, is probably the most abused too. I'm going to check that article jphmojo talked about.

Now that CG lost the name, does anyone know if the existing smokes are going to be more valuable or less?
