Dog Rockets? Decent Cigars?

OK, stupid question of the day...

Most of the cigars I buy are in the $8 to $10 range, most I have liked, but some are just plain nasty. I have smoked several $3 to $5 sticks that were quite nice as well, but the majority of those are not likeable. I understand nasty is all in the eye of the beholder...

Being a newbie my question is:

What constitutes a dog rocket? A nasty cigar? A cheap nasty cigar?

I do not like the RP Vintage 1992, but I know others here do.
I really like the Bahia Golds, others may not...

I have not yet made any trades, although I was bombed... (thanks Wicked Stick!)When I bomb the next guy or make a trade I want to go in knowing I will not be accused of sending doggie doodie.

Quote of the day: Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one, and they all stink.

Thanks guys.

Well any cigar that is nasty

You could leave an Opus X out for a few weeks, rehumidify it, and send it to someone, and it would be a dog rocket.

Mostly though you know it's a rocket just by looking at it...sloppy construction, short/mixed filler, from an unknown brand, or one known to be pretty crappy (La Finca or JR Alternatives come to mind).

But for some people these are perfectly serviceable cigars for mowing the lawn or playing poker.

If you see a retail price of under $1.50 ea that is a pretty good indicator. Not 100% but in the 90's for sure.

...and yet I've bought Padron Fumas' very close to the $1.50 mark, and they are most certanly not dog rockets... Price may not be the final word, but it's a decent indicator, to be sure.

A good cigar offers up some really appealing tastes and flavors; a great gar has a complexity of flavors that changes and intensifies as it goes. Nice on the palate and tasty, if you will. Construction goes without saying. A Fumas (my reference inexpensive gar) for sure isn't a beauty queen, but it's well made, and burns and draws just fine. A rocket starts off bad, and gets worse. Throw some acidy, ammonia taste in there that cooks your tounge as you go and you get the idea. If it falls apart or requires touch up after touch up to keep the keel even, that's not a good indication (humidity issues aside).

Everyone has different tastes; the bottom line to me is, was it interesting and leave you wanting to try another? If the answer is "no" then it's time to move on.

FWIW - B.B.S.

Edited for TyPos....

A FINE example why you shouldnt judge a cigar by its pricetag! If it werent for their ugly construction, i think the Padron Fumas would give most cigars costing 10 times + a run for their money in a all out taste test. Ive been buying them by the truckloads...litteraly. Simply amazing that a "cheap" cigar can taste so good. And the same goes true for alot of other no-name cheapos....same with bundles. Alot of people shun bundles, but there are some amazing deals to be had on fantastic cigars if your willing to weed out the dog rockets and go for what tickles your taste buds.

Dog rocket, just like premium has little or nothing to do with price...ive had 10+ dollar cigars that tasted like sweaty ass and had ones that costed less that 2 dollars that were amazing.

I'm disturbed that you would know what "sweaty ass" tastes like. :0

Price is not usually a consideration when I call a cigar a dog rocket, taste and construction are most important.

Most everything from Rocky I consider crap, along with CAO, Camacho, General, ALtadis and Perdomo. Yes there are a couple of cigars amongst those that aren't but in my opinion most are.

I think regular line Padrons for under 3 bucks a stick are great smokes, El Rey Del Mundo's and JR Ult's are good smokes especially for the buck.

So price to me isn't the reason I call something a dog rocket. Although that Perdomo Edicion De Silvio for 25 bucks a stick is a major dog rocket.

  Just use your imagination....seemed like the worst sounding taste i could imagine at the time!

If a cigar tastes so bad to you that you wind up wishing your Mother-in-Law would start smoking cigars just so you could give her the rest of the box ---that to me would classify it in the realm of "dog rocket."

Great... I have two of those coming. I guess I will have to judge for myself ???

I appreciate the responses, I gather if it is a cigar I would smoke, then for all intents and purposes it is not a dog rocket.

But... for the sake of argument, would a Perdomo Edicion De Silvio, and say a Forbidden X be an equal trade?

For the person getting the Opus :whistling:

I certainly agree with The Master's assessment of the EDS as a major dog rocket. I couldn't finish the last one I smoked. Can't say that I have had a Perdomo that I would smoke again. On the other hand, I like the RPs and several of the CAOs, the Brazilias in particular. I think that the RP Edge is a very tasty smoke for the price.

Yes, Padron produces some excellent lines of cigars. The Padron Londres Maduro is a good cigar for the money. And yes, it is true that even some expensive cigars could be considered as being dog rockets. The matter of price alone is certainly not the sole determining factor of whether a cigar is decent, or if it is a dog rocket instead. Regards, knightlaird

Ever since I discovered ISOMs and high end Fuentes and Padrons my Dog Rocket list has expanded dramatically. What I used to enjoy is just not cutting it anymore. My habit has gotten so expensive lately! I occasionally try to smoke some of the previously enjoyed smokes for the sake of saving money but I am definetly spoiled now. There are a few lower line smokes that I still enjoy but the list is pretty small now. Like right now. I am smoking an Astral Talanga Valley. It is OK but I am sure wishing that I didn't have 2 whole boxes of this ****! ****in' CBID!

The Perdomo EDS is not an awful cigar it is just an overpriced mild, boring cigar.

For 25 bucks I expect great flavor( doesn't have to be a strong cigar) and flawless construction. The first EDS I tried to smoke was a maduro robusto that was plugged. I then lit up a churchill in natural and was bored to tears. I tried another robusto maddy and was unimpressed with it's no body and little flavor.

Luckily I received all of these for free, a good friend of mine is a Perdomo rep.He wanted my opinion so I told him what I thought about his 25 dollar rip offs. lol

As far as a trade for Opus, I would never trade an OPus for and EDS. I don't care how many EDS's were being traded for the one Opus.
