Does anyone have any really good pics of plume? I did a search and couldn't find anything. I just realized yesterday that what I thought was plume was actually white mold :0 :0 :0

After suffering some severe depression and denial, I've moved on to the proactive stage and would like see some pics of what plume actually looks like. You can either post them here or email them to me at Inthacup1979@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Bloom (also called Plume)-- A naturally occurring phenomenon in the cigar aging process, caused by the oils that exude from the tobacco. It appears as a fine white powder and can be brushed off. Not to be confused with mold, which is bluish and stains the wrapper.

HERE is a link with good pics.

Thanks for the reply.

I've seen the site in your link. That is what lead me to realize I have mold. I was hoping someone had better pics of plume than what was shown there.

If its plume it can be brushed off. Mold will stain the wrapper.

could not find any pics

This is not necessarily true. This was white mold which did brush off and it left no stains on the wrapper. It also seems to be growing from the inside out. It always starts showing up on the foot and cap and it works it's way along the seams of the wrapper

Here's a pic:

Evil mold!

I would have picked that as bloom, but I'm no expert. I don't think there's anything wrong with brushing it off and smoking it, I haven't heard of that hurting anyone, I'm sure we've all smoked tobacco with a little mold on it without even knowing it. :)

I thought it was plume as well, but it has sbeen confirmed as mold by the guy who did the mold vs. plume website.

That looks like mold...due to its uneven growth, various sizes and the fact that is is growing along the seams where the wrapper is overlapped. I do know of people that brush it off and light up.

What is your RH in the humi/cooli/tupa/dor? & temp?

Is this the only one that has mold?

I call that one Mold bro. Bloom is much more uniform than that. If you get a magnifying glass, try and see if it is hairy or if it is crystals. I am betting it is Fuzzy Wuzzy :(

Either way, if it brushes off, then brush it and start smoking, it won't hurt you, and the longer you wait, the more likely it will be to ruin the flavor.

Never above 70%. It's an Avallo humidor with digital humidity control. It stays between 64-67% at all times. I believe that I bought a moldy cigar in it's earlier stages and infected some of the sticks it was touching once it progressed. This monte was touching the suspected culprit.

I've removed all the sticks with possible infection and I've wiped down the wood that they touched with a wet rag.

I don't mind the 'loss' of the infected cigars, I just don't want it to keep spreading in my humidor. Anyone have any extra precautionary suggestions?

Besides what has been said here mold will be a lot more "3 Dimensional" than bloom. Bloom will form on the cigar much like a layer of dust forms on a tv screen; thin and uniform. Mold will be more like the dust bunnies on top of your desk scattered and uneven.

I will go with the general consensus that that is indeed mold. :(
